"Opening/Closing Control Panel causes fault in Explorer"

When having problems with your Control Panel, ie; Lockups, System hangs on exit, ect:
It's a good Idea to Rename all your ".cpl" files. You can do this quickly from DOS by following the steps below:
C:\>CD WINDOWS\SYSTEM [ENTER]
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM>REN *.CPL *.OLD [ENTER]
Then Extract from your Win95 CDROM new uncorrupted ".cpl" files as shown below
To extract from CD, 1st Change Directories to the X:\WIN95> prompt, where X is your CD-ROM letter.
Then type the following:

EXTRACT /A /L C:\Windows\System WIN95_02.CAB *.cpl

Create Control Panel Extension

1. Double Click "My Computer".
2. Click View
3. Click Options
4. Click "File Types" Tab
5. Choose New
6. In the "Description Of Type" box enter "Control Panel Extension"
7. In the "Associated Extension" box enter "cpl"
8. Click the "New" button and in the 'Action" box enter "Open with Control Panel"
9. Enter in the "Application used to Perform Action" box "C:\WINDOWS\rundll32.exe shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL %1,%*"

10. OK your way out. Done!!!

Joystick Problems

Joy.cpl is obvious, it changes the icon. [vjoyd.vxd] is the file that actually provides the driver for windows.
Joystick driver May be faulty.
Uploaded the latest driver from MicroSoft(www.microsoft.com/hardware), and that may fix your joystick.
For the joystick, the driver for windows 95 and for DOS comes with a Diskette or two.
If you don't have one, don't worry since recent games have its own control for the joysticks.
To check your joystick whether it is working or not, do the following double click on
My Computer Icon, double click on Control Panel, Double Click Joystick Control,
in Control Panel and choose your joystick, simple- 2 buttons, 4 buttons, or 4 buttons with other stuff. and click calibrate, and follow the instructions as you see on the screen.
Now, that was for games in windows which requires windows data base for joystick.
In any game, you can find the control options.
If the exact settings you want are not available, choose the closest match.

That should run the program well.

Enable Internet AutoDial

If you have "Control Panel>Internet Autodial
1. Click on Start | Settings | Control Panel
2. Click on Internet | Choose the Connection tab
3. Check "Connect to the internet as needed"

4. Also select the ISP to connect

Install and Remove CODECS and MCI Devices

Microsoft Windows 95 Microsoft OEM Service Release versions 2, 2.1 This describes how to install and remove codecs and Media Control Interface (MCI) devices in Windows 95. Codecs are used to play compressed files by decompressing them in memory. Adding a specific codec lets you play files compressed in that file format. Removing and reinstalling a codec may solve problems playing a particular file type. MCI devices are drivers that provide Windows 95-based programs device- independent capabilities for controlling multimedia hardware and software. Removing and reinstalling MCI devices may solve problems playing certain files.

Adding All Default Codecs
To add all the default codecs in Windows 95, follow these steps:
1. In Control Panel, double-click Add/Remove Programs.
2. On the Windows Setup tab, click Multimedia, and then click Details.
3. Click the Audio Compression and Video Compression check boxes to select them, and then click OK.
4. Click OK.
Adding a Specific Codec or MCI Device

Video 1 Video Codec
SuperMatch___________Cinepak Video Codec
NOTE: Microsoft PCM Converter is installed by default.

The following MCI devices are included with Windows 95:
CD Audio Device
MIDI Sequencer Device
Motion Video Device

VISCA VCR Device
Wave Audio Device

If the codec or MCI device you want to install is not listed, it was not installed by Windows 95. If the codec or MCI device was included with another program, reinstall the program to reinstall the codec or MCI device. If the codec or MCI device is located on a driver disk, click Have Disk and specify the location containing the files. NOTE: Unlike the other MCI devices, the Mixer Device cannot be added manually. This device can be added only during the installation of a Windows 95-compatible sound card driver. When it is installing the driver, if Windows 95 determines that the driver can support the Mixer Device, it installs the Mixer Device along with the sound card driver.

System Icon Causes Computer to Lock up or Other Errors
When you click the System properties icon your starting the Sysdm.cpl. The following files are required to start either. Sometimes certain software installationss cause these files to be replaced with incorrect, inappropriate or older files without the customary notice that they are being replaced. Commctrl.dll, Commdlg.dll, Shell.dll, Lzexpand.dll, Ver.dll and Mmsystem.dll

To fix this it's best to extract from your Windows CD-Rom all the files mentioned:
Sysdm.cpl
Commctrl.dll
Commdlg.dll
Shell.dll
Lzexpand.dll
Ver.dll
Mmsystem.dll

Don't load that Control Panel Icon

Here's another way of Restricting Access to certain system files where little beavers may mess up you system.

Edit the CONTROL.INI file. Add a line to the [don't load] section so it looks like this:
[don't load]
snd.cpl=no

Replacing snd.cpl with the name of the cpl file you are trying to exclude.

Example; Here's mine:
[don't load]
snd.cpl=no
joystick.cpl=no
midimap.drv=no
sticpl.cpl=no

How to Run Control Panel Tools by Typing a Command

Windows 98/95/NT

To run a Control Panel tool in Windows, type the appropriate command in the Open box or at a command prompt.

NOTE: If you want to run a command from a command prompt, you must do so from the Windows folder. Also, note that your computer may not have all of the tools listed in this article, as your Windows installation may not include all of these components.

Control panel tool             Command

When you run the CONTROL command you are actually starting Control Panel with Control.exe, not the normal way Windows 95/98 runs Control Panel tools. The actual command line Windows uses is:

"rundll32.exe shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL %1,%*",

Windows substitutes the name of the tool you want to run for %1%. For example:

"rundll32.exe shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL appwiz.cpl"
