1. Subscribe to Sites

One of Internet Explorer's new features is the possibility to "Subscribe" to a site. Using this feature, you can download any changes to the page you have "Subscribed" to, and view them whenever you like - even when you are not connected to the Internet. Subscribing is a nice way to download any changes to your Favorite pages, at a any time you choose, even in the middle of the night, so you can view the pages later at your own leisure.

The most simple way to subscribe to a site is to right-click a page, select Add To Favorites, and check one of the options: Yes, but only tell me when this page is updated or Yes, notify me of updates and download the page for offline viewing.

If you subscribe, you can also press the Customize button, this will start the Subscription Wizard, where you can Customize your Subscription settings.

2. Browse the Web Unattended

With Internet Explorer's 4.0's Subscriptions you can connect to the Internet and download any changes in your Favorite pages even when you are not at your computer.

To configure this feature, first open the Internet Options dialog box by selecting Internet Options from the View menu. Select the Connection tab and check the Connect to the Internet using a Modem (or if this applies to your situation, the Access the Internet via a local area network) box. Choose Settings to select which service to dial, and to add your user name and password.

Once you've supplied this information, select Manage Subscriptions from the Favorites menu (not the Favorites button), and right-click the Site you want to configure. From the menu, choose Properties. Here you can enter all kinds of information, like the times to update, on which days, if you want to download the page(s) or if you just want a notification of any changes.

Internet Explorer will place a red gleam on your icon to advise you that a change has occurred.

3. With Internet Explorer 4.0 it's easy to work offline, for example to browse through the cache on your hard drive. Select Work Offline from the Internet Explorer 4.0 File menu. If you are online, your online connection disconnects, and you are able to read files directly from your cache. If a page isn't stored in your cache, you see a small "not" sign () next to the cursor. If you click a link that points to a page you don't have in your cache, you get the options of either going online to retrieve the page or to remain offline.

4. Check all your Favorite Sites

Internet Explorer's Subscriptions function let you check all your Favorite pages for any changes automatically. If the browser finds any changes, it adds a small red gleam next to the Favorite in your Favorites menu.

This function can be executed by choosing Update All Subscriptions on the Favorites Menu.

5. Configure your Subscriptions

To configure your Subscriptions, select Manage Subscriptions from the Favorites menu (not the Favorites button), and right-click the Site you want to configure. From the menu, choose Properties.

From the Subscription Tab you can Unsubscribe. It also gives you a summary of the other settings concerned with the subscription.

On the Receiving Tab you can choose to have an e-mail send to you if the Site changed. You can also choose between notification, or to download for later viewing. If you choose to download, you will be presented with a second dialog box, where you can specify what to download (Images, Sound and video, ActiveX Controls and Java applets), choose to download between 0 and 3 "levels" deep, if you want to follow links outside the subscribed Web site and the maximum download size per update. If the site requires a Login you can enter your Username and Password after pressing the Login button.

On the Schedule Tab you can choose for a Daily, Weekly, Monthly or Custom schedule and you can adjust the Schedule times/days when to perform an update.

6. Fast Forward and -Backward!

Right-click the toolbar's Back and Forward buttons, (or click on the drop-down indicator) and you will get a list of recently visited pages. Just select a page to browse back- or forwards. You don't have to click multiple times to get back to where you have already been.

7. Remove Channel Bar from your Desktop

You can remove the Channel Bar from your Desktop by right-clicking an empty space on the desktop, and from the context menu select Properties. Select the Web tab and un-check

Internet Explorer Channel Bar.

8. Find your Favorites fast!

There's an new and easy way to access your Favorites, even when you haven't started Internet Explorer 4.0. Click the Windows 95 Start menu. There is a new folder labeled Favorites. Highlight the folder to get a list of all your favorite sites. Click the one you want, and Internet Explorer 4.0 automatically launches itself and opens the page.

If you want you can remove your Favorites folder from the start menu using a simple registry hack!

9. Dual-pane Web searches

Using search engines can be a hassle, you have to enter a search, click a link, and then, if the link doesn't turn out to be what you wanted, browse backwards to return to your search results page. Internet Explorer 4.0 solves the problem with its Search Bar. When you click the Internet Explorer 4.0 Search icon, a narrow window appears in the left-hand side of the browser. Select a search engine, then type in your search terms. Click Search, and your result appears in the left window without affecting the right side of the screen. Click a result's link, and the target page appears in the right-hand window, leaving your list of results in the left hand window. Once you find a page that has the info you want, click the Search button again to toggle the Search Bar off. You can click the Search button at any time to toggle the Search Bar on again.

Internet Explorer 4.0's Search Bar is cool, but the narrow left-hand window doesn't have room for descriptions of the sites returned by your searches. Instead, you get a title-only list of search results. But you can find out more about each result. Just move the cursor over a link in the left-hand Search Bar window and hold it there. A pop-up tip appears, listing the URL and other relevant information about the page, including some sample text, as long as the search engine you are using supports this feature.

10. New Taskbar objects

You can now add a variety of new objects to the Taskbar, including an Address box, your browser's Quick Launch buttons, new toolbars or a set of icons for launching and toggling the applications on your Windows 95 desktop. To add a new toolbar, simply select an empty spot on the taskbar, right-click and from the context-menu that appears, select Toolbars. From here you can select some pre-defined toolbars, or choose New Toolbar. The New Toolbar Option lets you browse your hard disk, and you can choose any folder to become a toolbar.

New Icons can be added on a toolbar by dragging and dropping, or by finding the toolbars folder on your hard disk and making a shortcut in the folder. To find a toolbars folder, simply select an empty spot on the toolbar, right-click and from the context-menu that appears, select Open.

11. Launch Applications and Web pages from the Toolbar

You can add icon's to the Toolbar by dragging an item from your desktop or Windows Explorer, or click and hold a link in a Web page, then drag the item or link to the Windows 95 Toolbar, just to the right of the Start button. An icon will appear on the Toolbar and stay there, even when you restart your system. Now you can simply click the new Toolbar icon to launch the application or visit a Web page. It's a great way to keep often-used programs and URLs handy.

To remove any item, simply drag it off the Toolbar. To change the order items appear on the Toolbar, simply drag them to a new location, Internet Explorer will show you an indicator to indicate where the item will be pasted.

For more Information see: How to sort Shortcuts on Quick Launch Bar

13. Customize the Active Desktop

To add a new object to your Active Desktop, right-click a free spot on the Windows 95 background. Select Properties from the pop-up menu, then click the Web tab in the dialog box that appears. You can add and/or remove Active Desktop objects, including images and Web pages. To add, click the New button. This will take you to the Desktop Gallery at Microsoft to install additional components.

You can make any folder on your system into a toolbar:

Just right-click a blank part of the Taskbar, select Toolbars from the context menu, and choose New Toolbar from the menu. Then use the dialog box that appears to select a folder. Once you have a few toolbars open, you may find that you are running out of space at the bottom of your screen. No problem. Just grab any toolbar by its handle (the double vertical line at the left end) and drag it to any side of the screen: top, bottom, left, or right. Or if you prefer, drop it in the middle of the screen where it becomes a floating "palette" of tools you can move and re-size to suit your needs.

To save more space, make all toolbars self-hiding so that it appears only when you bring your mouse near it. Just right-click any toolbar and select Properties/Auto Hide from the menu. If the Auto Hide option is greyed out, first select Always On Top, then select Auto Hide. 19. Forgot a Cool Site?

Have you ever checked out some really cool Web site but then couldn't find it again a few days later because you forgot to bookmark it? Well, you can still find it. Internet Explorer 4's History folder contains a list of sites you have recently visited, and it keeps those for 20 days by default.

21. AutoComplete URL's

A new feature called AutoComplete fills in URLs you've recently typed, based on the first few letters you enter in the Address Bar. But if you are tired of waiting for AutoComplete to guess which site you are looking for, just type a few letters until AutoComplete makes its first guess, then press the up or down arrow key to cycle through recent URLs that begin with the characters you typed. Problems with Office 97 after Un installing Internet Explorer 4.0.

If you installed Office 97 after you installed Internet Explorer 4.0, and you decide to remove Internet Explorer 4.0, Office 97 will stop working. This is because Internet Explorer 4.0 and Office 97 share many files.

When you install Internet Explorer 4.0, it creates backup copies of files it replaces. If you later install Office 97 and then remove Internet Explorer 4.0, the pre-Internet Explorer 4.0 files reappear from the backup, overwriting shared files needed by Office 97. To fix the problem, reinstall Office 97. For more information, see Microsoft's Knowledge Base Article No. q174431
http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q174/4/31.asp

If you had Microsoft's Plus! System Agent installed prior to installing Internet Explorer 4.0, you won't get System Agent back by just Un installing Internet Explorer 4.0. System Agent was replaced by Internet Explorer 4.0's Task Scheduler. To get System Agent back, go to the /Program Files/Plus! directory, and double-click Sysagent.exe. It will tell you that System Agent has been turned off and asks you if you would like to resume using System Agent.

Also note that when you re-install Internet Explorer 3.* you will not find your Favorites folder. When installing Internet Explorer 4.0 it got the System attribute for the folder, which is not removed when Un installing Internet Explorer 4.0. The solution is to open a DOS window and use the Attrib -s command on the Favorites folder (\windows attrib -s favori~1). The location of your favorites when running Win NT is \winnt\profiles\<username>\favorites.

If you have previously downloaded or installed Web Integrated Desktop, you can enable it without connecting to the Internet by running Ie4setup.exe from your local Internet Explorer 4.0 Setup folder. When prompted, click Yes to enable Web Integrated Desktop, and then choose to upgrade only newer items.

Note #1: When you un-install the Web Integrated Desktop, whether you are un-installing just that component or Internet Explorer 4.0, on restarting your computer, it will try to find a drive named W:/. You can ignore the message that appears.

Internet Explorer Connection Problems

When Internet Explorer runs into connection problems, it loads an empty HTML document called blank.htm from the C:\Windows\System folder. There's no reason to leave this page bare, turn it into your own favorites page. Here's how it's done:

Before you start to edit blank.htm, you must open it in FrontPage Express. (If you don't have this free Web editor, you can download it from www.microsoft.com/ie/ie40/download .) Select Favorites, Organize Favorites, and drag all of the links you want into FrontPage Express. After you're done, resave blank.htm in its original location.

Or make life really easy on yourself by specifying c:\Windows\Favorites--or wherever your Favorites folder resides--as your home page.

Save your Address Book

I've  received quite a bit of mail concerning how to back up the Address Book. Since there seems to be some confusion about this;
So I looked for the answer:

Before you can make a backup of your Address Book, you have to know its location. The default location for the file is \Windows\Application Data\Microsoft\Address Book, but many people don't use the default installation folders. To locate your Address Book, open Windows Explorer and navigate to the default location for the file as listed above. If you see a WAB file, that's your Address Book. If you don't see a WAB file at this location, choose Tools, Find, Files or Folders. When the Find dialog box opens, type

*.wab

in the Named entry box. Then choose drive C from the drop-down menu in the Look In entry box and click Find Now. When Find locates your WAB file, click the file and choose File, Open Containing Folder. Now place a formatted floppy into drive A and drag the file's icon to drive A. Once you've determined the location of your WAB file, you can simply run Windows Explorer and copy the file to a disk in drive A.

How To: UNINSTALL IE 5.01

We've received many complaints from users of Internet Explorer 5.01, and in particular a lot of requests on how to get rid of it.  For those of you who wish to return to the trusy old version 5, read on.

The steps take a little explaining, and you can find more information at the following URL from the Microsoft Knowledge Base.

http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q246/1/94.asp

Note: If you have not installed Outlook Express before installing IE 5.01, you'll end up removing OE completely. The uninstall process reverts back to the last full version of OE, and if it finds no version, it simply removes OE. Proceed with caution.
