Helena Traphagen |

elena\Eledt Traphagen was baptized September 5, 1649 in the
Nieuwkirke in Amsterdam, Holland. She died in May 1732 in Brabant, Ulster County, New
York. She married Jan Burhans about 1675 in Kingston, Ulster County, New York. Jan was
born about 1650 in Holland, the son of Jacob Burhans.
Jan sailed
for New Netherlands April 16, 1663 on the Bonte Koe (Spotted Cow) with his
brother Barent and soon settled at Kingston where he was admitted to the Reformed Dutch
Church of Wiltwyck July 3, 1664. He was mentioned frequently in the early records of the
Kingston Court and the Reformed Dutch Church. With Jan Jansen Van Oosterhoudt, he was
granted a patent at Brabant (now Esopus) October 17, 1671 and he was appointed Schepen
(Magistrate) for the town of Swaenburgh October 6, 1673.
He died
prior to October 30, 1708 in Brabant, Ulster County, New York, when his eldest surviving
son Barent, made a bond to his brothers and sisters as to the disposition of their fathers
estate who "is removed from this world without disposing of his estate by
testament."
