BUTLER AND PORTERS CAVES
Butler cave is located in Virginia. The cave originally had one natural entrance which requires a 25-foot cable ladder climb to descend into the cave. Just recently a new walk-in entrance was dug and makes entry into the cave much easier via a 5-foot in diameter culvert pipe with handrails. Both entrances are gated and locked and permission is required to enter the cave. A member of the organization that manages the cave will be present on all trips. The cave has approximately 18.5 miles of passage and still has some loose ends to clean up to complete the cave survey. The system has many large passages and in general it is a friendly cave to visit.
Porters cave is located in Virginia and has one entrance to the system. The entrance is gated and locked and permission is required from the owner to enter the cave. This system has approximately 1.5 miles of surveyed passage. The cave is developed in three main trunk passages which parallel each other. There are many small side passages in the entrance area which form a maze. There are also pits in the floor throughout the entrance sequence and caution should be used when traversing this part of the cave.ENJOY THE PHOTOS!
