DEEP CAVE

Deep cave is located in Carlsbad Caverns National Park. In order to gain access to the cave, you must first drive through Lincoln National Forest along extremely rugged roads that only a 4-wheel-drive vehicle can handle. After parking, there is still a 45-minute walk to get to the cave. The entrance is a gaping hole with a steep slope leading to a ledge at the top of the drop. The steep slope requires a 150-foot-rope descent to gain access to the ledge. From the ledge, a 330-foot rope is required to reach the bottom of the cave. The descent is mostly on very steep slopes intermixed with short vertical sections. Finally the last 130 feet of the descent is a free drop to the base of the pit. A historical ladder from the 1920's, made from wire and sturdy sticks, hangs along the wall as you descend and care is needed not to get tangled in the ladder. ENJOY THE PHOTOS!
