MIDDLE EARTH
Middle Earth is a small cave located in West Virginia. The passages in this cave are developed along a strike in the limestone. The limestone bedding in the cave is severely dipped at about a 65-degree angle. Traveling in the cave involves following the strike in steeply sloping passages. As of February 2003, the cave had approximately 3200 feet of surveyed passage with going leads. The main chamber in the cave is a heavily decorated room with an array of columns, stalagmites, stalactites, draperies and rimstone pools. Extreme caution is needed when traveling through this room, which is appropriately named Helm's Deep.
