David James Morrow and Margaret Davis

David James Morrow was born on October 5, 1815 in Tennessee and died on June 11, 1882 in Dallas County, MO. About 1839 he married his first wife Lucinda Young in Missouri. She was the mother to all of his children. Lucinda was born October 15, 1821 possibly in Kentucky and died July 1874 in Buffalo, Dallas County., MO. She is believed by many present day researchers to have been part Cherokee.

In the 1860 US Census, Benton Twp., Dallas Co., MO, David is listed as 45 years old, born in Tennessee, living with his wife Lucinda and eight children. In 1870 he lived in the Jasper Twp. In the fall of 1869, David along with other Elders organized the Mount Pleasant Southern Baptist Church. The first church building was erected in 1870 at a cost of $400.00.

The second wife of David James Morrow was Mrs. Margaret A. Montgomery Davis. They were married on March 21, 1875 in Dallas County. Margaret was born September 3, 1830 in Pulaski, MO to William Montgomery and Nancy Ballew. She died June 22, 1898 in Buffalo, Dallas Co. MO, She is buried in the Crudgington Cemetery next to her first husband, William Davis. In the "Early Days in Dallas County" by Elva Murrell Hemphill (pg 954) John J Montgomery a well known farmer of Lincoln Township and was born in Pulaski Co,MO in 1826. He was the son of William and Nancy Ballew, Montgomery natives of NC. William Montgomery was born in 1792 and moved from NC to TN then to Crawford Co MO. They had twelve children five of whom are still living: John J.; Margaret A Morrow [formerly Mrs Margaret Davis] ;Charity Pointer; Thomas JB; and Nancy E Leckie. The following is Margaret Davis Morrow's obituary which was printed in the BUFFALO REFLEX on June 30, 1898:

Buffalo Reflex- 30 June 1898 Margaret A. Morrow, daughter of Wm. and Nancy Montgomery, was born 3 September 1830 in Pulaski Co., MO and fell asleep in Jesus at the home of her son, G.L. Davis one mile north of Buffalo on 22nd June 1898; age 68 yr less 2 mo and 11 days. She was twice married - first to Wm. M. Davis who was killed by lightning 38 years ago in sight of the house where Margaret died. By this union five sons and one daughter was born, all of whom are living; one brother, T.B. Montgomery and one sister, Mrs. E. Leckie. Her second marriage was to Rev. D J Morrow of the Baptist Church who preceded her. One of her sons, J.A. Davis, is the worthy preacher of the M E Church South. She was buried in Crudgington cemetery beside her first husband.

On June 24, 1861, at the age of 46, David James enlisted in the Dallas County, MO Volunteer Home Guards, Company G. He was honorably discharged as a Corporal on September 24, 1861. He rendered only 45 days of service. On July 18, 1890, Margaret applied for a Widow’s Pension based on David’s service. Her pension of $8.00 per months was granted on July 25, 1890.
