Mountain Camp '98
SNOWDONIA

April 1998
Everyone,

Well.. it happened! Despite the indifferent weather and the somewhat interesting driving conditions 9 Scouts and 4 Leaders, a minibus and a Ford Mondeo enjoyed Easter weekend in Snowdonia.

The age and ability of the Scouts split them naturally into two walking parties which comprised; Ian; Tim; Tom and Ben Oliver;Nick; Graham; Paul and Alex

~Moel Siabod ~
Friday saw both groups head for Moel Siabod, a peak above a disused quarry near Capel Curig, Snowdonia.
Although the groups could not operate without fairly tight reigns, everyone was able to take to the hills and experience something new - even if it was just large snow drifts.
Both groups experienced navigational difficulties leaving the road and heading up the hill, which resulted in a very pleasant stroll through a forest prior to the ascent to the hill above the quarry. Due to a frustratingly bitter wind, which would have been really unpleasant on the top of the ridge, the two groups decided to head back below the crags, avoiding the worst of the weather.
Key learnings ? Scouts cannot navigate on a road and wind-chill does exist!
Saturday saw the groups heading for the Glyders, one group walking East/West and the other West/East. A day of very changeable weather which saw some sun; some sleet; some snow and plenty of wind. (nothing to do with the beans!) The older group managed to get to the top and complete their route along the ridge according to plan.
The younger group spent most of the morning concentrating on key navigation and having snow-ball fights. They did manage one summit but decided it was a bit nasty on the top and reversed their route down. The early afternoon was taken up with more playing in the snow, often in drifts 3-4’ deep!
