THE MOON BUGGY STORY

The first moon buggy started out as a leftover Associated Graphite RC-10 chassis that was in a box of "grab-bag" stuff I bought for next to nothing at a local hobby shop. Among other things in the box were almost enough suspension parts to make two RC-10's. I've always thought two sets of front steering was neat looking ever since I saw an Elf/Tyrell race car years ago so I decided to try to build a R.C. toy with six wheels.

It isn't nearly as fast as your regular 1/10th scale off-road cars, but it has some interesting cornering characteristics. On a rough or loose surface it rides very level (with six shocks working), and corners really well. It doesn't do as well on a hard surface (like asphalt) because the slight changes in steering geometry (tricky alignment) make it want to "wander" rather than run a straight line. Cornering under full throttle suffers because it tends to lift the front set of tires off the ground, which leaves the wheelbase too short.

In spite of it's quirks, Buggy I is a blast to run, and it's definitely unique!
