May 17 - The Battle of Barentu:
Intense fighting continues in the vicinity of Barentu as Ethiopia captures Das. Ethiopian forces are trying to encircle Barentu, although a BBC report that the town was surrounded seems premature. An AP report cited unconfirmed rumors that the town had actually fallen late today.
UPDATE: Ethiopia tonight announced that Barentu was collapsing and the Eritrean troops there were fleeing. Eritrea later broadcast news that its troops were abandoning the town.

A glance at the map shows the critical importance of Barentu to Eritrea’s western divisions. The moon is full now, and fighting will probably continue through the night. Ethiopia does not want to give the fleeing Eritreans any chance to reorganize and re-equip themselves.
Holding Barentu, the main logistical center for the entire western front is particularly critical for Eritrea because of the large amount of munitions and supplies the Eritreans abandoned at the previous frontlines as they were pursued by the advancing Ethiopian forces. Reporters toured Tokombia today and observed additional munitions, including tanks, abandoned by the Eritrean army when it was routed by the Ethiopian forces.
