ADDIS ABABA, July 2 (AFP) - Rwanda Thursday announced its withdrawal from an African mission trying to mediate in the border conflict between Ethiopia and Eritrea because Asmara rejected a US-Rwandan peace plan.
The withdrawal from an Organisation of African Unity (OAU) team shuttling between Addis Ababa and Asmara was intended to allow the mission to succeed, a Rwandan diplomat told AFP here.
The US-Rwandan plan called for neutral demarcation of the border and a withdrawal of Eritrean troops to positions they held before May 6, when the war erupted.
But Eritrean President Isaias Afeworki refused to pull his troops back, and called for a new initiative.
