Throne Room
The king sighs slightly. 'Very well. I did not want to review the affair, but it appears that I
must.
'The Onyx war was fought a very long time ago. Even our best historians are not sure exactly
when, but at least a millenium has passed since this world saw that war. It was a war different
than any fought before, or since. The invaders were not neighboring countries. As best as our
historians know, the invaders were from another plane of reality altogether.'
The king pauses to let all of this sink in, and then continues. 'It began when a priest
accidentally contacted this other plane. The Onyx, for that is what it called itself, attacked his
mind and posessed him. The priest was strengthened, but his will became that of the invader's.
The priest gathered up a large force and proceeded to expose them to the Onyx, strengthening it.
I am unsure of how this was done, but it appears that the Onyx can be transferred between
people, even spread between more than one person. Once the priest had a loyal core, all
infected with the invader, he and his allies gathered armies, and marched on the rest of the
world. This town, as well as everything east of the High Barrier, was forced to war against
these armies. It was a horrible war- the invaders could not be stopped, as they were posessed of
something not of this world. We began to lose the war. It was then that the Clerics of Eleein
intervened.'
The cleric group sounds familiar to you. You then remember that your friend Shila is a cleric
of Eleein.
King Allenton continues. 'The Clerics could use their magic to remove the Onyx from those
possessed. Without the leaders, the attacking army soon fell into disarray, and our forces pushed
them back across the High Barrier. The Clerics succeeded in removing the Onyx from all who
were possessed, with the exception of the priest himself. Our forces chased what remained of
his army back to the Onyx tower, where he had begun his suicidal quest. There, he destroyed
himself, as well as the rest of his army. None have entered the Onyx tower since.'
A tingle runs down your spine. Of course nobody had entered the tower! You hadn't heard of
the Onyx war before, but you sure knew about the tower. Everyone did. You heard spooky
stories about it as a kid. Most spooky stories about other topics wear off when one becomes an
adult... but this one has stuck with you. As well as everyone else, at least that you know. Simply
put, it's suicide to go into the tower. More accurately, even the suicidal would not approach it.
You hope that you're not going there....
'Do you understand?' The king asks.
You nod in agreement
