Societies People

They take what they have for granted it seems.

"Work for what you get". They don't know what it means.

They don't have to ride with buggy and horse

across country miles on a rugged course.

To get those things they're longing for

they simply drive to a department store.

To walk six miles to school would simply be

out of the question; an impossibility.

Now they hop on an autobus

that takes them there with little fuss.

The next person I hear complain to me

and say that they aren't really free

I'll shake my head and have to agree

for we all are trapped by society.

Lately has anyone you've talked to said

that they mill their own flour to bake their own bread?

How many can say they've drunk milk straight from a cow

instead of running to the store as most do now?

How many do you think Wash. their clothes in a stream

instead of using a washing machine?

Does your neighbor till his field with plow and horse?

Not today; he uses a tractor of course.

Do you think he works in the yard to get get his tan

or use the beach as his frying pan?

The next person I hear complain to me

and say that they aren't really free

I'll shake my head and have to agree

for we all are trapped by society.

How many children have ridden a horse

amongst the trees on a bumpy course?

How many can say they've ridden a hog

"til thrown into a muddy bog?

How many have seen a calf or colt being born?

How many can say they've shucked their own corn?

How many have been on a hayride at night

then danced in the barn 'til it was daylight?

The next person I hear complain to me

and say that they aren't really free

I'll shake my head and have to agree

for we all are trapped by society.
