Avignon, in Provence, France, is where the Popes moved to when Rome became too dangerous. Not as luxurious as the Vatican, but the Popes who lived here were chosen for their ability to lead wars and control kings and emperors. Even many of the architectural details are martial, as the second picture shows.
But come on, these guys were still Popes and didn't want to live in a fortress. Anyone who was rich enough lived in the sister-town across the river and came by carriage to work (below). The original bedroom community?
Not too far from Avignon is the town of Arles, where Vincent Van Gogh lived while painting many of his most famous works. Those familiar with his work will recognize the scene of his "Le Cafe La Nuit" in the photo below. I ate there, and the truth is, his painting was alot better than the food. For those unfamiliar with the original painting, I have included a copy of it as well.
