Carcassonne is in Southern France at the base of the Pyranees.  It was one of the last strongholds of the Cathars in the 11th and 12th centuries, and continued to be an important fortified site up through the 1700's.  The old city remains in excellent condition today, and has no buildings younger than 400 years inside the city walls. There are two complete rings of walls around the city, as you can see in the first picture below.  The second picture shows the main entrance--note the two drawbridges.
