Regimental HQ:
James Murrell SHACKELFORD was born July 7 1827, in Lincoln County, KY. He died Sep 7, 1909, in Port Huron, Michigan. Prior to the Civil War he was in the Mexican war and was a lawyer. Civil War service began in 1861 when he was recruited for the 25th Kentucky as a Colonel at Fort Donelson. He resigned in March 1862 and then raised the 8th Kentucky Cavalry as their Colonel. In March 1863, he was appointed BGen. of Volunteers. He was at wounded Geiger's Lake, and pursued Morgan in his Ohio raid. He commanded a cavalry division at Cumberland Gap, a Cavalry Corps at Knoxville, and resigned from the Army in January 1864. His post-war career was as a lawyer and judge.
Benjamin Helm Bristow was a Union officer in the Civil War and one of the outstanding Republicans of the post-war era. Benjamin helped organize the 25th Kentucky Infantry and the 8th Kentucky Cavalry. One source lists him as a Colonel. After the war he became United States Attorney for the District of Kentucky. In 1870 he was named the first Solicitor General of the United States. From 1874 to 1876 he served as Secretary of the Treasury. It appears that Shackelford brought Bristow with him from the 25th KY Infantry. It also appears that Bristow became Colonel of the 8th KY Cav. when Shackelford was promoted to Brigadier General.
Company "A" :
Baxter C. Doyle was born in 1847, the son of John Doyle and, most likely, Malvina Fortner, of Logan County, KY. He
was Carol Hughes' 2nd-great grandmother's brother. He enrolled on 5 Aug 1862 at Russellville at the age of 15. He was mustered into service at Russellville on 6 Sep 1862 as a private, and he was mustered out with the same rank on 23 September 1863. He joined Captain McCullough's Company, which subsequently became Company A of the 8th Regiment Kentucky Volunteer Cavalry. On 6 September 1866, he married Sarah Jane Elizabeth Ramsey in Logan County at the home of Captain Z. Ramsey. There is a "B.C. Doyle" is listed in the Atlas of Logan Co., KY (1877) as a constable in Gordensville Precinct, where he also lived. Baxter C. Doyle appears in the 1890 Texas Census of Civil War Veterans, residing in Fulbright, Red River County, Texas; it is noted he incurred no disability during the war. Baxter's brother, Granville M. Doyle, served in the Civil War with Company E, 26th Regiment Kentucky Infantry. Company "B" :
Private Wilson Adams was related to Elaine and was born in Lincoln County, KY. According to discharge papers, he was enrolled on August 4, 1862 for 1 year of service and was discharged Sep 17, 1863, at Lebanon, KY. His Commanding Officer was listed as Captain Isaac Singleton. Corporal Jesse Sheridan served with the Co. "B", 8th KY Cavalary. Corporal Sheridan mustered in at Henderson, Kentucky in 1862 and mustered out at Lebanon, Kentucky, in 1863. Corporal Sheridan then moved his family to Hawesville, Kentucky and then to Vigo County (Terre Haute), Indiana. Jesse was born on March 30, 1831 in Jefferson County, Kentucky, married to Mildred Archer of Jefferson County, Kentucky, August 24,1854, and lived a long life raising (9) children in Vigo County, Indiana. Private William Skeens may be a brother or cousin to Gail Hoffman's greatgrandfather. In the Macoupin County, Illinois, Cemetaries' Veterans Honor Roll, there is listed William Skeens, Civil War, Pvt., Army, Co. B, 8 Ky Cav. Died 11/Jun/1924. Company "C" :
Corporal James T. Goode was with Co. "C", 8th KY Cavalry and is the greatgrandfather of Christy Campbell. He is also an ancestor of Judith Fisk. He was born Mar. 26, 1826 in Missouri, the son of Alford and Catherine Wethington Goode of Kentucky. On October 4, 1846, he married Mary "Polly" Jane Morris in Marion County, KY. They settled in Casey County, and had about 12-14 children. According to pension papers, James Goode enlisted in the 8th Cavalry on July 28, 1862 as a private, and was appointed a corporal in Company C by Captain Whipp upon organization of the company. He was honorably discharged on Sept. 17, 1863, and died May 7, 1877, in Casey County, KY. He is buried in the old Van Diver Cemetery in Casey County. Private Robert Henson is Mark Etelamaki's 2nd Greatgrandfather, descended from Joseph Henson, a brother of Elisha Henson (Who fought in the War of 1812). He enlisted on July 28, 1862, mustered into service with Company "C" at Russellville on Sep 8, 1862 and mustered out at Lebanon on Sep 17,1863. Robert was absent without leave for 2 days in Nov 1862, but returned voluntarily. He was punished and returned to duty by Col. Shackelford. He was taken sick with mumps and fever and treated at the Army Hosptial at Bowling Green, KY from Nov 15 to Dec 15, 1862. Then while on the march to Clarkesville, TN came down with a case of Cholera. He received a pension and lived in Casey County, KY.; Winchester, Illinois; Missouri; and Benton County, Arkansas. He died in 1910 and is buried in the New Bland Cemetery in Rogers, Benton County, Arkansas. He was 6'2", had a dark complexion, black hair and blue eyes.

Private James Durham was Dennis Durham's 3rd Greatgrandfather. He enlisted July 28, 1862 at Casey County for twelve months. He was discharged September 17, 1863 at Lebanon, KY. Private Alexander C. Mason of Casey County, KY., served in Co "C" of the 8th Kentucky Cavalry (US). He was born 19 Feb 1842 to William MASON of VA and Jane ALLEN of KY. He died on 27 Apr 1911. He enrolled on July 28, 1862; Mustered in on September 8, 1862 at Russellville, KY for 1 year. Mustered out at Lebanon, KY September 17, 1863. He is a granduncle of Judy Shamp and is buried in the Fair Cemetery at Walnut Hill, Liberty, Casey County, KY. Private James Taylor Rigney was Judith Fisk's great-grandfather. His wife was Maranda Sharp Rigney. Their daughter, (Judith's) grandmother was Nancy "Ann" who married Greenberry Edwards. Private Rigney had a boyhood friend who served with him in the 8th Ky Cavalry Co C. His name was Brice M. Edwards. This Brice Edwards signed an affadavit for the widow of his best friend in 1902. He states he is 62 yrs. This same Brice Edwards deeded a piece of land

Private Monroe Adams was the great-grandfather of Michael Frye. He was enrolled on July 28, 1862 at Liberty , KY. Records show Charles M. Whipple(?)commanding. He participated in several skirmishes with the rebel army. He was on detached duty from Bowling Green on Oct. 25, 1862 at Read Springs, Tenn., and mustered out at Lebanon, KY. Sept. 17, 1863. Corporal Joshua Finch entered on duty August 20, 1862 at Russellville, KY. He mustered out Sept. 23, 1863 at Russellville, KY. Promoted to rank of Corporal on Feb. 27, 1863. Company "E" :
Captain John A. Arthur joined for duty at Newport, KY on 26 August 1862 and appears on muster roll at Henderson, KY dated 13 Sept 1862. He was taken prisoner by guerillas near Elkton, KY on 3 Aug 1863, and was confined at Libby Prison, Richmond, VA on 23 Aug 1863. He was transferred to Danville, VA on 7 May 1864, and released at N. Company "F" :
Private James King Polk Chapman was born on Sep 5, 1845 and died on Apr 17, 1919. He was the Greatgrandfather of Jim Chapman, and was enrolled on August 5, 1862. Private Robert Milton Henson was Mark's 1st cousin 4 times removed, was Robert Henson's 1st cousin, and was the son of Elisha Henson (War of 1812). He was recruited on August 7, 1862 at Hustonville, Kentucky and discharged on September 17, 1863 at Lebanon, Kentucky. His CO is listed as Captain Carsin in his pension record. Robert Milton Henson's brothers Andrew J. and Job Henson also served during the Civil War. They were in Company "C", 3rd Kentucky Infantry Regiment (US) along with other "Casey County Boys" (Note: The 3rd KY INF was mustered in at Lebanon, KY). Robert Milton Henson served with Company F, 8th Kentucky Cavalry (US), along with his father-in-law, William Tarter and cousin James Beldon Henson. They were directly involved in the pursuit of John Hunt Morgan, and Robert Milton was wounded in action when he received a gunshot to the gut. (Sources on Robert Milton: Rita Jones and Mark S. Private Ashley Warren was a greatgrandfather of Faye Cram. He served in Company "F" with his brother Enoch Warren and other relatives: Robert J Watson, David Watson, Wm.H.Watson, Robert Wesley, and Plesant Wesley. They all lived in Casey Co. and Pulaski Co. KY. Their Commanding Officer was listed as Captain Carter. In a letter written by Lt. John Richards (on behalf of Ashley's widow when she was trying to get her pension), he states that "While in the line of duty" and in a charge upon some Rebels, (Possibly in Cheatham Co., Tenn...The ink is smeared) his horse fell and injured him bodily and other parts from which he never recovered". He was mustered out with the rest of his Regt on Sept 17,1863 at Lebanon
KY. He died in Washington County, KY. on April 8,1864 of what the Dr. states as "dropsy of the heart as if a great might had fallen upon him." (Source: Faye Cram) - Contact Faye

Company "H" :
First Sergeant Matthew H. Owens was enrolled at Henderson, KY, as a First Sergeant on the 9th day of August, 1862 in Company H of the 8 Regiment of KY Cavalry Vols., and was honorably discharged at Russellville, KY on the 23 day of Sept. 1863. He collected a pension and died Jan. 19, 1902, at Boxville, KY. He was married on the 13th day of November 1867, to Nancy Jane Tripp at Morganfield, Union Co., KY. Sergeant Zacharias L. Tripp enlisted on 4 August 1862 at Henderson and was Discharged on 23 September 1863 at Russellville. Corporal Cornelius Alexander Brown served with his future brother-in-law James O. Brown in Company "H". Cornelius was Steve Lynn's 3rd Great Grandfather. He was born 5/7/1842 in Henderson Co., KY, a son of Obadiah and Matilda Ann (Sights)Brown. He enlisted as a Private in Company H on 8/13/1862, and was mustered in Henderson on 9/13/62. He was promoted to Corporal on 4/30/1863. He was mustered out at Russellville, KY on 9/23/1863. He married Mary Elizabeth Brown (maiden name Brown) and resided in Union and Webster Counties. He died 12/12/1912 in Clay, Webster Co. and is buried in an unmarked grave in the Shady Grove Cemetery in Poole. He served with his future brother-in-law (Steve Lynn's 3rd GreatGranduncle) James O. Brown. James enlisted the same day in Company "H". James served as Wagoner. James was born about 1841 in Scott Co., Illinois, the son of George N. and Mahala (Six) Brown. He married Ann R. Jewell in Webster Co., KY on 12/14/1867. I note from various research in the Kentucky Adjutant General's Report and Official Records, that the Companies (including Co. H) raised in Henderson, KY made up the 1st Battalion of the 8th KY Cavalry. Check out the book "The Partisan Rangers of the Confederate States Army" by CSA Brig. Gen. Adam R. Johnson, it provides accounts of several skirmishes that took place between Shackleford's 8th KY Cavalry and Johnson's 10th KY Cavalry (CSA). Private Robert B. Virgin was born in 1843 in Illinois, the son of William Hiram Virgin. He enrolled on 4 August 1862 at Henderson, Henderson County, Kentucky. He was mustered in on 13 Sep 1862 as a private in Company H and was mustered out on 23 Sep 1863 at Russellville, Logan County, KY, with the same rank. He also served as a private in Company A, North Cumberland Battalion, enlisting on 4 January 1865 at Caseyville, and was discharged at Henderson, in August 1865. In 1865 he married Mary Ann Brown in Union County, KY; they had six children: William, George, James, Lucy, Emma, and Eliza. He was a farmer in Union County before and after his military service. In 1887, when he made application for a pension (No. 595,263), he was five feet five inches tall, weighed 120 lb., had a fair complexion, auburn hair, and gray eyes. He lived in Boxville, Union, KY. His claim was denied, because he could not prove his elbow injury occurred during service. From the description of the accident, it appears he was tackled from behind by one of his comrades at Russellville in August 1862, and he dislocated his elbow when he fell. No surgeon's report exists for the accident, but his application states, "The surgeon of his regiment Dr. Ross treated affiant but the arm or elbow joint was never properly replaced." The hospital records for the regiment
commenced 12 August 1862 and ended August 1863 with no evidence of Robert's disability. Robert pursued his application but failed to appear for a physical examination in 1893, and the file was closed. Twice thereafter his children tried to pursue the claim after Robert died about 1896, but no monies were owed them because the pension was never approved. As another story about the war, one letter in Robert's pension application file, written in 1888, states, "He had the measles at Russellville and was on the march three days in the rain with the measles broke out on him and as it so happens they settled on his lungs and he is in very feable health." Company "I" :
1stSgt Obadiah Smith Co I, was born May 1 1842 and died July 1912. He is buried in the Barbourville Cemetery, Knox Co, KY. He married Lucinda Baxter in Casey County in 1863 and their children were William, Samuel, James, John, Alery D, and Sarah. He was discharged Sept 17,1863, at Bowling Green KY.

Sergeant Quinton Anderson He was a sergeant in Company "I" from July 28, 1862 to Sep 17, 1863. After the war, he went to Ft. Worth, Texas and married. Private Andrew Hancock was the g-g-grandfather of Shirley Waterman Harris. He was born Sep 5, 1824, in Adair County, KY, and enlisted in the Union army 28 Jul 1962 at Russellville, KY for a term of one year. He was assigned to Capt. Dever's Co. I, 8th Reg. Ky. Cav. as a private. His assignment was that of a
teamster driving a supply wagon. In Oct. 1862, he became ill with camp dysentery and went home without official leave. He sent word back that he was sick and was off muster roll in Nov. and Dec. 1862. From Jan. to Sep. 1963 he was present and mustered out in Lebanon, Ky. on 17 Sep 1863 having served his one-year term in full. The Army allotted Andrew $40.62 for
clothing and paid him a bounty of $27.00. This bounty was not explained. Andrew had 7 dependent children and a wife at home in Columbia, KY. He died Mar. 11, 1870 of camp dysentery having never regained his health. He received a $12.00 per month veteran's pension from 1866 until his death. I note in the 8th Reg. Cav. there is no mention of him. The info above came
from General Services Adm. Washington, D.C. about 25 years ago. There was a copy of a letter from Andrew's wife Rebecca Walker Hancock in the file complete with her signature. Their oldest son, George Taylor Hancock ( my g-grandfather) ran away from home after his father returned and lied about his age (14) and served in the 13th Reg. Ky.Cavalry, Co. M for one year. I
also have his file from the GSA. In it was a copy of a letter from G.W. Penn, Capt., Co.M, 13th Ky. Cavalry which you may find interesting. (Source: Shirley Harris) - Contact Shirley
Private Tilford C. Lane was Tommy Lane's 2nd Greatgrandfather. He mustered into service at Casey County, Kentucky, on July 20 1862. He caught measles while on duty at Russellville, KY and was treated by two regimental surgeons, Dr. Morrisson and Dr. Wilcox. Tilford was discharged on Feb 20, 1863. Private Larkin Leathers was in Company I commanded by Capt. John Dever in the 8th Regiment of Kentucky Volunteers who died in the line of his duty in the service of the United States on the 16th day of April 1863, at Camp Clarksville, Tennessee Hospital of inflamation of the brain or Brain Fever. He was married on the 11th day of May 1862, to Sallie J. Richardson. His Pension No. 101037. He was enrolled on the 28 day of July, 1862 at Casey Co. Ky. in Co. I, 8 Regiment of KY Cav. Volunteers, to serve one year and mustered into service as a Pvt. on the 8 day of Sept 1862, at Russellville, KY. On the muster Roll of Co. I of that Regiment, for the months of March & April 1863, he is

Private Robert Wofford (aka WARFORD, Wafford) who served in Company "I" was born in 1808, in Casey Co., KY. He died Oct 15, 1878, in Martin Co., IN. He was married to Frances BLAKE of Anderson Co., KY. He filed a pension request in May of 1869 from Bartholomew Co., IN. Robert had been enlisted at Hughstonville, KY on August 13, 1862 and was honorably discharged on the 17th of Sept 1863 near Russellville, KY as a consequence of the fatique experienced while chasing deserters and from chronic diarrhea which disabled him from "doing company duty". He was sent to the hospital at Clarksville, TN for one month. Robert was described in his discharge papers as being, 5'8", red complexion, blue eyes, sandy hair and by occupation, a laborer. His papers show the Company Commander as John Dever and also state that the soldier contracted mumps and chronic diarrhea which finally caused his death at Loogootee, in the State of IN on the 15th day of Oct 1878. Further information on this document said that the soldier enlisted 28 Feb 1862, mustered 08 Sept 1862, discharged 17 Sept 1863, filed Invalid application 03 May 1869, and he died 15 Oct 1878. His widow recieved $8.00 a month pension commencing 16 Oct 1878.
Company "K" :
Private George Washington Murphy enrolled on August 8, 1862 at Russellville, KY. He mustered into service on September 6, 1862 and mustered out in 1863. He was born in 1833 and died in 1866. He was the 2nd Greatgrandfather of Shirley Lyons. He died in 1866 as a result of measles he had during the war. He had a constant cough, and never recovered. (Source: Shirley Lyons) - Contact Shirley

Sergeant John Samuel Richardson was the 2nd Great-grandfather of Stuart Diamond. He was discharged at Russellville, KY on September 23, 1863. The Company was commanded by Robert N. Grinter. Additional entry:CLEMENT KENDRICK HICKMAN COCHRAN was born 1837 in Glasgow, KY. He served in Co. M, 8th Kentucky Volunteer Cavalry. He joined on July 28, 1862 and served until he was mustered out on September 17, 1863 at Lebanon, KY. He
was promoted to Corporal in May of 1863. He died 1904 in Louisville, KY and is buried at Cave Hill Cemetery there. His first wife was Margaret Vanoy and his widow was Martha A. Marple. George Wesley Cochran was born July 7, 1842 in Casey County, KY. He enrolled as a private in Company M of the 8th Kentucky Volunteer Cavalry on July 8, 1852. He was honorably discharged at Lebanon, Kentucky on September 13, 1863. His military records show that he was 5 feet 7 inches tall, had a
fair complexion, blue eyes and light hair. He was a farmer and lived at Kidd's Store before and after the war. His widow, Mary Elizabeth Lanham, applied for his pension in 1910 from Casey County, Kentucky. George was 68 years old at the time of his demise on January 21, 1919 on Frey's Creek in Casey Co, KY. He and his wife had only one child, a son. He is buried in
Poplar Grove Cemetery in Casey Co, KY near Liberty. He donated the land on which Poplar Grove Church is built. He is the son of Lewis L. Cochran and Nancy Oliver. (George W. Isham Monroe Cochran was born Dec. 20, 1846 in Casey County, KY. He enrolled as a private in Company M of the 8th Kentucky Volunteer Cavalry on July 28, 1862 at Liberty, KY. He was Mustered in on Sep, 8, 1852, at Russelville, and mustered out on Sep. 17, 1863. He lost his right eye during the Civil War on March 25, 1863 at Clarksville, Tennessee and was declared to have been nearly blind. He died on May 13, 1925 at his home in Casey County, KY. He was married to Rebecca Caroline Short in 1869 and they had a family of 6 children - 4 boys and two
girls. Widowed Rebecca applied for Isham's Civil War pension from Casey County Isham is the son of Lewis L. Cochran and Nancy Oliver and is buried in Poplar Grove Cemetery in Casey County, KY near Liberty. (He is a brother to my gg-grandfather, William Cochran, of the First KY Volunteer Cavalry. Private Hugh Keene Hughes served in Company M, 8th Kentucky Cavalry and was the Grand Uncle of Dennis Russell. He was born 07/04/1838 in Morganton, Blount County, Tennessee and died 01/24/1921 in Greenback, Loudon County, Tennessee. He is buried beside his wife Annie Elizabeth Bruner Hughes (b. 09/24/1848 d. 10/03/1915) in the Georgiana United Methodist Church Cemetery in the Georgiana Settlement on Merritt Island, Brevard County, Florida. Their Grave markers read as follows: Hugh Keene Hughes - July 4, 1838 - Jan. 24, 1921. Annie E. Bruner - Wife of Hugh K. Hughes - 1848 – 1915. An article written in the “Georgiana” section of the June 8, 1900 edition of The Indian River Advocate, Titusville, Brevard County, Florida, states Hugh Keene Hughes served with Company M, 8th Kentucky Cavalry during the Civil War. According to Union Army veterans records on file in The National Archives, Hugh K. Hughes, age 25 years, joined for duty and enrolled for a period of twelve months on July 28, 1862 in Pulaski County, Kentucky. He was mustered into Captain Parker’s Company, 8th Regiment, Kentucky Cavalry, as a Private on September 8, 1862 in Russellville, Kentucky. This organization subsequently became Company M, 8th Regiment, Kentucky Cavalry, commanded by John D. Beldon. Hugh K. Hughes was detailed as 1st Teamster on November 1, 1862 and held that rank through February, 1863. He answered roll call throughout his twelve months of service and was ultimately mustered out as a Private on September 17, 1863 in Lebanon, Kentucky. Samuel King, JR. was enrolled as a Private in Company M of the 8th Kentucky Volunteer Cavalry on July 18, 1862. He was a native son of Kentucky and just 18 years old when he put on the proud blue uniform of a Union soldier. He was mustered out with the company on September 17, 1863. Just two months later, he took his bride, Marietta Edwards, in the month of November.
Together they had three children - two sons and a daughter. Sam died on May 27, 1869 in Casey Co, KY and is buried in Poplar Grove Cemetery in Casey County, KY near Liberty. Private James Propes was enrolled into the 8th on 28 July 1862 and he was mustered in in Russellville, KY on 8 Sep 1862. He was a Farrier for Co. "M" of the 8th KY Vol Cav. He mustered out with nearly everyone it seems in Lebanon, KY on 17 Sep 1863 after one year of service. He is buried in Casey Co. KY at the Salem United Methodist Church grave yard. He has a military head and
