FLARC General Meeting - June 1, 1999

The meeting was called to order by Dave Schaefer N9DMS at 7:30 pm. Minutes from the previous meeting were read and approved.

FIELD DAY - Mary Jones KF9ZB is collecting food money. Dave Rece NO9M has the signup sheet. Steve Ensley KB9RRM is in charge of refreshments. Ted Gisske K9IMM will talk about setup and operating for tonight's program.

DX - Jim Hugo KE9ET reported that Annobon (3C0) will be on later in the year. Marion Island (ZS8) is on now. San Rotter WB9ELB mentioned that Peter Mooney WA9JSH/MM is on 14.305 and 14.045 at 1500Z and 1830-45Z. He will be trying other bands. Check our web page under "links" for coordinates and details.

NETS - Stas Wnukowski KC2AK and Dave Werner W2QA had another 10-meter check-in from 2-land.

NOVICE CLASS - Don Michalski W9IXG said at least 12 are already signed up for the September 18-19 class.

NEW BUSINESS - Don W9IXG says ARRL is pushing the new form 605 in place of the old 610.

BUCK NIGHT - Winner was Don W9IXG. FLARC General Meeting - May 18, 1999

The meeting was called to order by Mary Jones KF9ZB at 7:30 pm. Minutes from the previous meeting were read and approved. The new balance was $3310.96 with 99 members.

GUESTS - Fred Moore WN9I and Pat McPherson WW9E.

UPGRADES AND SIGN CHANGES - Bud Morin K9ENC upgraded from General to Extra.

FIELD DAY - Ted Gisske K9IMM passed around a sign-up sheet for operating and meals. No Novice station due to a lack of novices and tech plusses. Camping will be allowed Friday and Saturday nights. Well-behaved dogs are welcome. June 15 meeting will be a site visit. Spare generators are needed. Marylynn Franzen K9SAM would like to collect meal money ahead of time. $10 buys dinner Saturday evening (choice of steak or ribs; bring a dish to pass) plus Sunday breakfast. Chefs are Bill Hanold N9CHN and Dave Rece NO9M.

DX - Jim Hugo KE9ET reported that his antenna is almost up. East Timor may become a new entity. VHF/UHF - Ted K9IMM is hearing LUs on 6 meters now.

CONTESTS - Frank Holliday WB9NOV mentioned the June 12-13 ANARTS RTTY contest, the All-Asian CW DX contest June 19-20, and Field Day June 26-27.

NETS - Stas Wnukowski KC2AK said the 10-meter net had a Colorado check-in. The 75-meter net has been quite active also. Sam Rowe KG9NG is looking for one more net control for the InfoNet WEB PAGE - Stas KC2AK reminded us to check the web page for further info on the PSK group; about six people are involved so far.

NOVICE CLASS - Don Michalski W9IXG had 12 or 13 people signed up so far for the September class. VE TEAM - Sam KG9NG reported everything was going okay.

PUBLIC SERVICE EVENTS - Gary Dennis KG9FL was asked if FLARC could provide operators again for the Tour de Cure bike ride. 6-7 hams are needed for the 100K ride on Sunday, June 6. Meet at Elver Park in Madison. They will use the 146.94 repeater. Contact Gary KG9FL for details.

NEW BUSINESS - Don W9IXG will be the new section manager for Wisconsin. BUCK NIGHT - Winner was Frank WB9NOV (again). Frank's name is going to be retired from the drawing permanently.

PROGRAM - Pat McPherson WW9E from Chicago gave a presentation on SATERN (Salvation Army Team Emergency Radio Network).

FLARC General Meeting - May 4, 1999

The meeting was called to order by Dave Schaefer N9DMS at 7:30 PM. Minutes from the previous meeting were read and approved. The new balance was $3218.84.

FIELD DAY - Ted Gisske K9IMM announced that John Wacker N9YJV will be the co-chair. We will have grilled ribs and steak again, courtesy of chefs Bill Hanold N9CHN and Dave Rece NO9M.

DX - Bill N9CHN reported that Libya (5A) was on and very copyable.

VHF/UHF - Ted K9IMM said that 6 meters has not been very good yet. CONTESTS - Frank Holliday WB9NOV mentioned the WPC CW contest

REPEATERS - Doc Schroeder K9YXW reported that the country-wide American Lung Association bike trip will be using the 146.88 Baraboo repeater July 14-17. They need hams to monitor traffic and also are looking for eight operators to make the trip. 146.76 is back on the air, although with no autopatch right now. It is still at UW Hospital.

SPACE PLACE - Don Michalski W9IXG mentioned that Space Place needs participants for a radio demo using the BARS 146.685 repeater on Saturday, May 8, at 10:30 AM. Jim Lattis KB9REO reported that the May 11 speaker would be Dr. Steve Ackerman of the Space Science and Engineering Center, on the Earth Observing System. Time is 7 PM.

NETS - Stas Wnukowski KC2AK said the 10 meter net has been up and down; 75 meter net is good.

MADISON SWAPFEST - Sam Rowe KG9NG mentioned that everyone is welcome at the MARA meeting on May 10.

NOVICE CLASS - Don W9IXG talked about the upcoming Novice Class. It will be September 18-19. Seven or eight people are already signed up. The last class produced 11 new techs.

NEW BUSINESS - Bill Gulley KB9SUP asked everyone to read the article on PSK 31 in the May issue of QST. There is a local e-mail support group forming to help users get set up. The frequency they are using is 14.068 plus or minus.

FLARC General Meeting - April 20, 1999

The meeting began at 7:30 pm in room C of the American Red Cross Building. The minutes from our last meeting were read by Marylynn Franzen K9SAM and accepted as read. Marylynn announced that Hale Blakely W9CBE is in the hospital suffering from pneumonia and a heart attack.

GUESTS - Carl Schultz, license pending.

UPGRADES AND CALL CHANGES - Tom Garrison KB9TPQ upgraded to tech plus at last weekend's class at UW-Space Place.

NOVICE CLASS - Don Michalski W9IXG and Gary Dennis KG9FL discussed last weekend's licensing class at Space Place. Don is expecting to hold the next class in September or October. Please let him know if there are any conflicts that would interfere with having the class during that period.

REPEATERS - MARA's 146.76 repeater is down until further notice. Their 147.15 repeater will be getting a new controller. Approximately 1,000 people attended the MARA Swapfest and more money was made than last year. This was better than expected.

FIELD DAY - Ted Gisske K9IMM gave an overview of Field Day. We will be operating HF primarily. Think about what bands you will want to work.

BUCK NIGHT - Winner was Chuck Forster WA9ACI. Not present were Dick Lindgren WB9BFV, Bill Hanold N9CHN, Larry Seidl KG9OX, and Keith Hester KS9C.

PROGRAM - Chuck WA9ACI presented a Red Cross video.

FLARC General Meeting - April 6, 1999

The meeting was called to order by Dave Schaefer N9DMS at 7:30 pm. Minutes from the previous meeting were read and approved. The new balance was $3381.17.

GUEST - Fred Moore WN9I. DX - Jim Hugo KE9ET reported the Rodriguez Island (3B9R) DXpedition is still on, but having propagation and cyclone problems.

CONTESTS - Frank Holliday WB9NOV mentioned the MARAC SSB county-hunter contest April 10-11.

NETS - Sam Rowe KG9NG said the InfoNet may be linked to Milwaukee in the future.

NOVICE CLASS - Don Michalski W9IXG discussed the upcoming April 17-18 class at Space Place, which is full with 29 students. The syllabus has been distributed to instructors. There will be a special introductory session on April 10 for younger students. Gari Berliot NG9V asked that VEs be there around 2:30 on Sunday for the exams, which will run from 3 to 6 PM.

WEM - Mack Brophy N9NTB mentioned that Y2K preparations are accelerating.

SPACE PLACE - Jim Lattis KB9REO said the guest speaker on April 13 would be Dr. Jim Gage from the Environmental Remote Sensing Center, talking about marketing satellite data. The 2nd and 4th Saturdays at 10 AM are family project days, followed by ham demos at 10:30 on the 146.685 BARS repeater.

Gari NG9V can check QSL cards for the Worked All States award.

Sam KG9NG needs a few more volunteers for the MARA Swapfest on the 11th, mainly closers.

FLARC General Meeting - March 16, 1999

The meeting was called to order by Dave Schaefer N9DMS at 7:30 PM. Minutes from the previous meeting were read and approved. The new balance was $3266.90 with 92 paid members.

MEMBERSHIP NEWS - Duane Brummel K9SFI died of cancer on March 15.

UPGRADES AND SIGN CHANGES - Jackie Jeardeau KB9LYM earned her General ticket. Tryg Hillbo's new call is W9TSH (ex-KB9UAV). DX - Jim Hugo KE9ET reported that Palestine (E4) is still on. St. Peter and Paul Rocks (ZV0SB and SW) are on now, as is Revillagigedo (XS4).

CONTESTS - Frank Holliday WB9NOV mentioned the BARTG RTTY contest on March 20-21 and CQ WW WPX on March 27-28.

REPEATERS - Doc Schroeder K9YXW said WOLX has hired a consultant to track down the noise problem with 146.88 and others on their tower. The CWRA banquet is March 20 at Lake Wisconsin.

RED CROSS - Chuck Forster WA9ACI mentioned that the Saturday training session went okay, most attendees were out-of-town people.

NETS - Stas Wnukowski KC2AK reported they are going okay. The Night Owl Net is adding more Hoots.

WI QSO PARTY - George Shands W9WUU said results will not be in Badger State Smoke Signals this year but will be available on the web. Get your scoresheets and logs to Steve Franzen N9CK. Must be postmarked to WARAC by March 31. Good effort this year!

MARA SWAPFEST - John Hicks KA9KYB has advance tickets. Sam Rowe KG9NG needs volunteers starting at 5 AM. They will try to set up Saturday evening as much as possible.

NOVICE CLASS - Jim Lattis KB9REO said the April 17-18 class is full. Format will be similar to the January class.

SPACE PLACE - Program on April 13 will have two speakers from the Earth Remote Sensing Center on selling satellite data.

FLARC General Meeting - March 2, 1999

The meeting was called to order by Dave N9DMS at 7:30 PM. Minutes from the previous meeting were read and approved. The new balance was $3360.10 with 87 paid members.

DX - Jim KE9ET reported that Palestine (E4) has several stations on.

VHF/UHF - Ted K9IMM said there was a pretty good aurora several days ago.

CONTESTS - Frank WB9NOV mentioned the BARTG RTTY contest and CQ WPX SSB contest. George W9WUU talked about the Wisconsin QSO Party to be held March 14. He went over the finer points of competition and passed out rules, multiplier lists, and summary sheets. Steve N9CK will coordinate submission of logs; they must be postmarked by March 31.

RED CROSS - Chuck WA9ACI discussed the Communications I Workshop to be held Saturday, March 13 from 12-3 PM at the Red Cross building. Register by calling the Red Cross at (608) 233-9300 X 297.

FIELD DAY - Ted K9IMM will chair. Need a co-chair. Past co-chairs Steve N9CK and Roger K9EMG have other commitments that weekend.

MARA SWAPFEST - John KA9KYB has tickets available.

NEW BUSINESS - Bill AF9B has a room and a half available for the Dayton Hamvention. Call him at (608) 273-8373 if interested. Scott K9MA contacted Ted from New Zealand with an update on his bicycle trip.

FLARC General Meeting - February 16, 1999

The meeting was called to order by Dave N9DMS at 7:30 pm. Minutes from the previous meeting were read and approved. The new balance was $3215.90 with 80 paid members so far for the year.

GUESTS - Griffin KB9TKI and Paul N9VWH.

NEW MEMBERS - Doug KB9UAU and Matt KB9QDC were introduced.

DX - Jim KE9ET reported that Palestine (E4) went on the air today for the first time.

CONTESTS - Frank WB9NOV mentioned the ARRL DX SSB contest is March 6 and 7, also the Wisconsin QSO Party is March 14.

VHF/UHF - Ted K9IMM said there was still no sporadic E to Europe on 6 meters.

REPEATERS - Gari NG9V reported that 146.94 is back on the air. Larry KG9OX mentioned that BARS will have a table at the Engineering Expo April 16-18. Kachina is donating the use of a rig for the event. There is a sign-up sheet on the web page. They also have a new Kenwood HT with packet capability for the Expo.

INFO NET - Sam KG9NG needs another net control for first Tuesdays.

SWAPFEST - Sam KG9NG said tickets are now available. Volunteers get in free so talk to Sam to sign up. MARA is donating a table for FLARC to use.

PACKET - Mike KF9AF mentioned there is still a 25" monochrome monitor left for disposal.

QSO PARTY - George W9WUU talked about basic rules and the WA1UJU logging program. Entries must be postmarked by March 31. Steve N9CK will coordinate entries again this year.

BUCK NIGHT - Winner was Larry KG9OX. Not present were Jennifer W9JEN and Donna KG9LA.

PROGRAM - The video of Father Moran 9N1MM from Nepal was postponed until the March 2 meeting.

FLARC General Meeting - February 2, 1999

The meeting was called to order by Dave N9DMS at 7:30 pm. Minutes from the previous meeting were read and approved. The new balance was $2975.46 with 65 paid members so far.

GUESTS - Lloyd Berg N9LB and Paul Toussaint N9VWH.

UPGRADES AND SIGN CHANGES - Lynn Ward is now KB9UAT.

DX - Jim KE9ET reported that Campbell Island ZL9CI finished with a record 96,000 QSOs for a new DXpedition record. East Timor may become a new entity.

CONTESTS - Frank WB9NOV mentioned that ARRL DX CW contest is February 20-21 and CQ WW SSB 160 is the last weekend in the month.

REPEATERS - Paul N9VWH said the problem on 147.15 was loose wires and the repeater has been replaced. The controller may be replaced after the swapfest in April. 146.76 had a tune-up a couple of months ago. Ed N9MW said 146.94 will be down for about a week. The controller is being replaced and will once again have phone-patch capability.

RED CROSS - Chuck WA9ACI needs new communications people to train. A new power supply system will be installed in the radio room. The surplus equipment needs to be disposed of.

NETS - Stas KC2AK reported excellent conditions for the HF nets. Sam KG9NG needs several net controls for the InfoNet. Don W9IXG mentioned the 11 PM Nightowl Net on 146.685. Check in five times and get a "Hoot" certificate.

SWAPFEST - Sam KG9NG needs volunteers for the MARA Swapfest on April 11, especially for setup. Waiting for tickets to get printed.

NOVICE CLASS - Don W9IXG mentioned a possible class near the end of April, concentrating on UW students.

WEM - Mack N9NTB said there is a rumor of a $3000.00 satellite system being required by FEMA. He is in the WC9AAG hamshack at 9:15 on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings for tests. He will be happy to give tours.

SPACE PLACE - Jim KB9REO mentioned Prof. Linda Spark's presentation on April 9 on gravitational lensing, "When Gravity Bends Light." February 23 is Jim's talk on conjunctions for "Eyes on the Skies."

WI QSO PARTY - George W9WUU encouraged everyone to participate on HF and/or VHF even if just for a short time. The Feedline is collecting e-mail addresses for mailing. Contact Peg KB9LIE or Carol NS9L.

BUCK NIGHT - Winner was Kevin KF9AQ. Not present were Dan N9HFR, Keith KS9C, and Ray W9NJH. PROGRAM - Members of the Madison DX Club talked about hints for successful DXing. Thanks to Ed N9MW, Gari NG9V, Herb W9LA, Roger K9EMG, Steve WD9FLI, Jim KE9ET, and Kevin KF9AQ.

FLARC ANNUAL MEETING - January 19, 1999

The meeting was called to order by Dave N9DMS at 7:30 PM. Marylynn K9SAM gave the balance in the treasury - $2599.62 with 45 members paid to date for 1999. Peg KB9LIE listed major club activities for 1998:

* Ham of the Year was presented to Chuck Forster WA9ACI

* Wisconsin QSO Party - 2nd in the club division with 30 entries

* W9S Sesquicentennial Special-Event Station - 1835 QSOs

* Tour de Cure public-service event * Field Day - 2nd nationally in 8 Alpha category

* Fox Hunt won by W9IXG and KB9REO * One Novice Class was held * Monthly VE sessions

* Lots of support for other groups' events

Frank WB9NOV moved to accept the unopposed slate of officers and directors as presented by the board, seconded by Stas KC2AK. Passed unanimously. Elected were President Dave N9DMS, Vice-president Mary KF9ZB, Treasurer Marylynn K9SAM, Secretary Peg KB9LIE, and directors Roger K9EMG, Steve KB9RRM, and Carol NS9L. Doc K9YXW moved to adjourn the annual meeting, seconded by Larry KG9OX. Passed unanimously.

FLARC GENERAL MEETING - January 19, 1999

Minutes of the January 5 meeting were read and approved.

UPGRADES AND CALLSIGN CHANGES - Jim KB9REO upgraded to General. Lynn Ward is a new Technician and waiting for her call. Larry (ex-KB9TGT) is now KG9OX.

DX - Jim KE9ET reported that Campbell Island (ZL9CI) had over 70,000 QSOs already, with 10,000 on the first day of operation.

CONTESTS - Frank WB9NOV mentioned the Ten-Ten contest the weekend of February 6-7 and the RTTY WPX contest the next weekend.

NETS - Gary N9DRA is looking for net controls for the CWRA Swapnet on Sunday mornings. Sam KG9NG needs net controls for the InfoNet on Thursday evenings. Stas KC2AK said the 10M Net has been busy. The 75M Net is getting QRP check-ins.

WEB PAGE - Photos from the Novice Class will be posted. WEM - Mack N9NTB reported that a FEMA statewide HF test would be held on March 10. SPACE PLACE - Jim KB9REO said it would remain on Park Street for the foreseeable future.

NOVICE CLASS - Don W9IXG gave a recap of the Novice Class held last weekend. 26 people signed up, of which 24 actually attended the class. 10 VEs helped with the exams, resulting in 18 new technicians and one general. Jim KB9REO thanked everyone who helped and asked that FLARC continue its support for the classes. 25 is a good number of students. Need to plan ahead to make sure Now You're Talking is available. Evaluations were in favor of the one-weekend format but would like more actual demos. Having the N9UW hamshack right there was a real benefit. Gary KG9FL suggested a 5 WPM CW class, possibly instructed by Scott K9MA. Don plans to keep in touch with the students and will try to find elmers for them.

OLD BUSINESS - Sam KG9NG is signing up volunteers for the MARA Swapfest on April 11.

BUCK NIGHT - Winner was Mike KF9AF. Not present was Steve WD9FLI.

UPGRADES AND SIGN CHANGES - Jim Patterson KC9GO has his original call back - K9DXL.

DX - George W9WUU mentioned the Campbell Island DXpedition (ZL9CI). VHF - Ted K9IMM is still looking for sporadic E on 6 meters yet.

CONTESTS - Frank WB9NOV said the winter NA QSO Party contests are coming up - CW is this Saturday and sideband is next Saturday. CQ WW 160 M CW Contest is January 29-31. George W9WUU mentioned the Wisconsin QSO Party will be March 14 and logs must be postmarked by March 31.

NETS - Stas KC2AK reported the 75 meter net has been starting around 9 AM or after QCWA gets done. Lots of activity on the 10 meter net but it's hard to find a clear frequency, so look around.

BARS 146.685 repeater has a Night Owl Net at 11 PM; their URL is members.aol.com/guardm.

INFO NET - Sam KG9NG needs more net control stations.

WEB PAGE - Field Day photos have been popular, also the minutes page.

NOVICE CLASS - Gari NG9V is coordinating the VEs for the exams at the end of the class.

NEW BUSINESS

- Gari NG9V said CWRA's new mailing address is P.O. Box 8211, Madison 53708. Ted K9IMM and Carol NS9L had a DXpedition to Cooper Island near Tortola (VP2V; NA-023 for island hunters). They had 925 Qs, mostly 10 meter sideband to the US.

- The following are running for office - Dave N9DMS for president; Mary KF9ZB for vice-president; Marylynn K9SAM for treasurer; Peg KB9LIE for secretary; and Roger K9EMG, Steve KB9RRM, and Carol NS9L for the board. Stas KC2AK made a motion to accept the slate as presented by the board, seconded by Ted K9IMM. Passed. There were no nominations from the floor. John KA9KYB made a motion to close the nominations, seconded by Jack KC9A. Passed.

UPCOMING PROGRAMS - February 2 is the annual Madison DX Club presentation. February 16 is a video on the visit of Father Moran 9MINN to the Clinton Iowa ARC in 1990.
