DEMOCRACY - This type of government, allows the people - the majority - to make all laws and change any and all laws, usually in the form of elected representatives.  Canada is a democracy.

A country can be a democracy and a republic at the same time.

MONARCHY / KINGDOM - This type of government has a king/queen or other as its head.  Generally, but not always, this ruler makes all decisions and has the final say in all matters.

Frequently, a monarchy is also a democracy, as in the case of Great Britain, where even though there is a queen, who can exert authority at any time, the people are allowed to elect representatives and a prime minister to oversee the daily affairs of the kingdom.

Constitutionally Limited Republic - is a country where the overall structure of the government, as well as the rights of the citizens are laid out in writing.  Generally, a country's constitution cannot be altered by a mere majority i.e. (50% + 1).  It usually requires a 2/3 "majority" and sometimes more to alter this document, as in the case of the United States.

A country CANNOT be a democracy and a constitutionally limited republic at the same time.

The United States

In order to amend the American Constitution, an amendment must pass Congress with the support of 67% of the House AND Senate.  From there, it must go to each individual state legislature, where the same rule generally applies.  Once 75% of the States of the Union have ratified the amendment, then and ONLY then can the Constitution be altered. This system was designed by the founders so that it would very difficult to change the founding document.  And if the Constitution were altered, then it would be because most people in the nation agreed.

So then, what is the United States?

If you said that it is a democracy, technically you would be correct.  Not because that is what the Constitution says but, precisely the opposite - because the Constitution is not in effect.  A game is being played with you.  According to the Constitution, the United States is NOT a democracy. There is, obviously, some history that requires examination here.

In the 1930's (1933, I think), an executive order was signed by then President Roosevelt that suspended the Constitution.  I believe it was called "The Emergency War Powers Act" or something to that effect. This executive order was NEVER rescinded and is still in effect today, barring changes made by subsequent presidents.  Although, I am having difficulty finding the documentation, I know it exists.  By the same token, I can't see the sun at night, but I know it is there.

Democracy amounts to little more than mob rule.  Whatever the mob wants, the mob gets.  To quote from the Illustrated World Encyclopedia (©1969 New York), under the title democracy, it says:

Since the people rule in a democracy, they can have the government run any way they please.  If they wanted to, they could decide to take away all their freedoms.  They could decide that everybody would have to go to the same church and read the same books and newspapers.  They could decide that no one could criticize the government or travel from town to town without a passport or quit his job.

Pretty scary isn't it?  Sounds more like Nazi Germany than the United States.  And yet you people claim you live in a democracy.  Welcome to the cold hard reality of oppressive government.  Here is something else - imagine this, those of you who have red-hair.

Suppose there is a rash of crimes and moronic ideas by people with red hair.  Such are the crimes that there is an outcry from the populace as you have never heard before.  The people want all red-haired individuals to be rounded up and have tests performed on them to determine why this is happening and if a cure cannot be found, they want them executed or banished from the land.  Congress, abiding by the "will of the majority", obliges by passing the necessary legislation.

I ask again, what is the United States today?

Is this compatible with the Constitution and Bill of Rights?

If you said this is a democracy then the Bill of Rights is worthless.

Show me an amendment in the Bill of Rights that has not been "infringed" by Congress or other governmental institutions.  There isn't one.
