Y2K ADDENDUM
The following is "an informal brief" of my Y2K experience (while at Baker Hughes Inteq as Sr. Project Engineer).
At Baker (BHI), my primary role was support of their Wellbore Construction Group (WCG).
WCG builds and operates "built for purpose" coiled tubing drilling rigs and installs/operates BHI's coiled tubing drilling systems/equipment on third party rigs (Shell, Exxon, BP, etc.).
My Y2K function involved testing, managing/effecting "Fixes", Validating, and ensuring compliance with the corporate legal statement of Y2K with both BHI's proprietary and third party vendor - equipment and systems utilized by WCG.
These were supervisory, certification, liaison, and direct implementation (programming, chip upgrade, vendor engineering assistance) duties involving:
- Hardware (Sparc stations, PCs, RTUs/PLCs, smart instruments - smart instruments usually only requiring ROM replacement or load if flash EPROM)
- Firmware (BIOS systems & "hard coded" proprietary to BHI or vendors)
- O/S (UNIX, DOS, Windows, proprietary)
- Databases
- Proprietary and custom software (host, RTU/PLC, controllers, communications equipment, C++, others)
- Overall rig (fully integrated systems functionality)
Understand, though this was somewhat extensive, there were (and are) many people within Baker Hughes Incorporated who had no other responsibility than fulfilling BHI's Y2K commitment.
I was only the engineer / support / liaison / mechanic / focus for WCG's utilized equipment and systems.
If you need further details or clarifications, do not hesitate to contact me.
