I searched for God in chapel halls
and altars where we prayed,
in holy pictures hung on walls
and where the children played.
I searched for God in poetry
and songs the righteous sing,
and then I learned humility
and searched the lowly things.
I hadn't thought to search for Him
among the down and out,
the battered, torn ones, scarred
by sin,
and bruised by fear and doubt.
Yet that is where the Master can
extend His deepest grace,
so now I seek in every man
my Savior’s loving face.
