Hiram Hughes was born on December 13, 1828, in Durham, Greene County, N.Y, the fifth of 13 children. He could not join military service during the Civil War, due to a physical disability; instead, he served as a teamster (teamsters packed and drove the wagons used by regiments as hospital wagons and to move supplies.) About 1868, he moved along with five families to near Decatur, Iowa.
On July 3, 1870, Hiram married Sarah Ann McDonald. He acquired farm lands in Harrison and Mercer counties (adjoining counties); this farm was southwest of Pleasanton, Iowa and north of Cainsville, Missouri.
Hiram died in Cainsville, Missouri on March 9, 1926, at the ripe old age of 97 years, 3 months. He and Sarah are both buried in the Hughes Cemetery on what was their farm.
Hiram was the father of 2 children.
