Howard Malcolm Hughes was born on July 11, 1830, in Durham, Greene County, N.Y, the sixth of 13 children. On July 11, 1850, he maried Sally Ann Locy in a double wedding at Little Mountain, Ohio.
On November 4, 1861, Howard and his brother Harrison enlisted in Hazen's Brigade, Company G, of the Forty-first Ohio Volunteer Infantry, during the Civil War. His brother Ira had previously joined on September 10, 1861. Howard was discharged for physical disability on June 14, 1863, at Nashville, Tennessee.
