ADVANCED PROBLEMS IN GRAPHIC ARTS

PROBLEM #1.  You are to go to this web page: http://pages.bolt.com/me/creativepower/run.html and use it to improve it graphically.  This page was selected because it was done by a writer and not a graphic artist. There is a link to her journal but it is located at: http://www.gurlpages.com/other/creativepower9/index.html .  It also has a lot of personal data.  This is important if you are a practicing Graphic Artist.  In the real graphic art work world you are to "read the mind of your client" and give them what you think they would like.  This site has a lot of the "mind of the client".  Thing to remember:

1.  You cannot violate copyright law.

2.  You are using your knowledge and creativity to make this page represent the client.

3.  If you wish her to consider using your material (without pay) you are to sign her quest book and tell her so.  Click on private message if there is an option to do so.

4.  To receive extra credit for this you are to tell me you did it and bring it up on your monitor so I can grade it.

PROBLEM #2.  You are to pretend you have a job from a pharmaceutical Company to create the packaging (box) for the RED pill.  The RED pill is a pill that will give you unlimited knowledge for thirty days.  This means that if you take the pill you will possess all the potential knowledge of the universe.  The box must me made to where it will print on an eight and a half by eleven inch sheet of paper.  It can be in color.

1.  To get credit for this project you must print it on the printer and also construct it.  This means it will be in two pieces to hand in for a grade.  The real box and the flat sheet of paper (printed on both sides) that shows the fold lines and the graphics.

2.  The flat sheet (printed on both sides) must go in your portfolio for a grade during portfolio evaluation.

PROBLEM #3. You are to make three to five illustrations from Lewis Carroll's Red Queen.  For a copy of the text go here:  http://members.tripod.com/~jackbowman/SuperCode/cqueen.htm   For a sample of illustrations go here http://members.tripod.com/~jackbowman/SuperCode/jqueen.htm    I do not expect your illustrations to look like this.  I expect them to be more conventional (Always remember you are to please the client and in this case I am the client).  Illustrations are closer to Fine Art than the other disciplines of Graphic Arts but are still a Commercial/Graphic Art.  For a definition of Creativity that also explains the difference between Commercial Art and Fine Art go here: http://www.fortunecity.com/victorian/coldwater/234/creat.htm .

1.  To get credit for this project you must make the ORIGINAL three, four, or five illustrations and save them on your user space.  Then tell me you have them ready to grade and I will grade them from your monitor.

2.  Additionally you must print them on the black and white Laser printer and place them in your portfolio for a grade during portfolio evaluation.

PROBLEM #4  You are to make four original clip art pieces that follow one theme such as Art, Food, Cars etc. You are then to make a web page that offers these as "FREE CLIP ART".  These four clip art pieces cannot be larger than two inches by three inches.  These must be saved as .gif files.

1.  These "clip art" pieces are Graphic but are also higher order graphics.  In other words they are more creative than placing a font at a specific place on a flyer or web page.  To better understand higher order graphics you must go to this page and answer these questions.  http://www.fortunecity.com/victorian/coldwater/234/artheory.htm

     a.  Is a stick used to dig in the ground a piece of art?

     b.  Is a decorated stick used to dig in the ground a piece of art?

     c.  What probably causes inspiration?

     d.  What is stimulated with beauty?

     e.  What is love?

The answers to these questions must be placed in your portfolio to grade during portfolio evaluation.

2.  A print out of you web page with the graphic pieces on it must be placed in your portfolio to grade during portfolio evaluation.  NOTE: You do not have to publish your web page on the internet for a grade.
