1905-10 Lion Issues

A long series of stamps were issued between 1905 and 1910 although all were dated 1904.

The values run from 1 centavo to 20 Pesos. They were engraved by the South American Bank Note Company in Buenos Aires and exist in three perforation varieties - 11 1/2, 11 1/2 x 12, and 12, although not all values exist in all these varieties.

I have no record of any essays for this issue, but a fair number of proofs are known. I shall list those I have seen or which have been recorded by Kneitschel (K).

Because this was a time of turmoil it generally is not possible to assign a date of issue beyond the year. Frequently a particular stamp was noted in the philatelic press as having been issued and then a year or more later, it was remarked that it had not been issued before, but was issued now.

The quantities issued are known for some values, but there is no breakdown as to the quantity of each color. The following are the numbers I have found reported.

1c - 5,000,000 2c - 1,000,000
5c - 5,000,000 10c - 1,000,000
20c - 1,000,000 30c - 1,500,000
60c - 1,000,000 1 P - 200,000
2 P - ? 5 P - 100,000
10P - 100,000 20P - ?

Blocks of 4 are know of all values although very scarce for the 2c olive green.

Because covers of this issued are not uncommon, I record only those of the Peso values.
