Airmails

Airmail service in Paraguay started with the granting of an airmail contract by the government on 14 September 1928 to the French company, Aéropostal. Service began on 1 January 1929 with operations being under the subsidiary Aeroposta Argentina. Service was twice weekly. However, because of the world-wide depression, service was terminated on 17 April 1931 when Aéropostal went into receivership. Paraguay then was without air service for six years until Pan American Airways was permitted to provide service by a Decree of 21 June 1937. Service started in December 1937. It is interesting to note that Paraguay continued to issue airmail stamps even though they were without air service.

All the airmail stamps of Paraguay have been counterfeited and these will be covered in the chapter on counterfeits. It is interesting to note that except for the First Provisional Issue and the First Zepp Provisional Issue all the airmail stamps of Paraguay are perf 12 (except for a few perf varieties). The First Issue and the First Zepp Issue are perf 11½, so except for these issues a perforation other than 12 most likely will turn out to be a counterfeit.

First Issue

The first issue of airmail stamps - a provisional issue - was of three values, a 2.85P, 5.65P, and 11.30P. The basic stamps, the official issue of 1913 printed by the South American Bank Note Company were overprinted with new values. I do not know who did the overprinting but suspect it was done in Asuncion.
