The 1984 Season

Record: 9-7
4th in NFC Eastern Division

Synopsis:

The off-season brought a ton of changes, and it started at the top. The health of owner Clint Murchinson was failing and had to sell the team. The Cowboys were bought by H.R. "Bum" Bright, who promised to leave the operations in the hands of Schramm, Brandt, and Landry. The off-season also had many retirements. Gone were Harvey Martin, Pat Donovan, Billy Joe DuPree, and Robert Newhouse. On top of that, Drew Pearson was injured in a car accident and never returned to the team. The draft did bring in some future Cowboys, but not enough to stop the bleeding.

The 1984 season was up-and-down. One good win was followed up with a disappointing loss. Through it all, Dallas still had a chance to make the playoffs. Those hopes were dashed with season-ending losses to Washington and Miami. Though Dallas ended the season with identical records to the New York Giants and St. Louis Cardinals, Dallas remained home for the playoffs for the first time in a decade. Dallas both scored and allowed 308 points, which placed them in the middle of the NFL
