The 1991 Season

Record: 11-5
2nd in NFC Eastern Division
Wild-card Playoff Team

Synopsis:

The Cowboys acquired the overall number one pick from the Patriots with help from the remnants of the Herschel Walker trade. The Cowboys choose Russell Maryland with that selection and Alvin Harper later in the first round. Again the draft proved deep for the Cowboys and helped further the building process. The Cowboys were further helped through Plan B and trades. The Cowboys were now ready to challenge.

Although the season began with a win, the Cowboys lost the next two. The Cowboys got on track by winning four straight including the 14-2 eventual Super Bowl Champion Washington Redskins. Dallas finished the season with an 11-5 record and a trip to the playoffs. The offense drastically improved to 342 points scored, and the defense allowed 310. The team was coming to together. The trio of Aikman, Irvin, and Smith was already proving to be one of the NFL's best.

The Cowboys played Chicago in the first game. Aikman was injured and Steve Beuerlein filled in to lead the Cowboys to a 17-13 victory. This allowed Dallas to go to Detroit. This train stopped there as Detroit massacred Dallas 38-6. The Cowboys got the taste of the playoffs and a win. The good stuff came in the next couple of years.
