The 1999 Season

Record: 8-8
Second Place in the NFC East

Synopsis:

The good news for the Dallas Cowboys was that they are the defending NFC Eastern Division Champions.   The bad news is that they are the defending NFC Eastern Division Champions.   Why ?   Because what comes with the division championship is the harder schedule for the 1999 season, and oh boy what a schedule.  The off-season kept the Cowboys in the news- and not in a good way.   Drug problems, again, were the topic.   Defensive lineman Leon Lett may have tested positive to drugs and faces a lifetime suspension by the NFL.   Additionally, former 15-season Cowboy (Cowboy record) Mark Tuinei died of a herion overdose.

The 1999 Season was a new season, but the Cowboys were playing the same song.  Although improved, the Cowboys still had problems in the red zone and this cost them dearly in many games.  After the beginning the season well, including a terrific come-from-behind overtime victory vs. the Redskins, the Cowboys again faultered down the stretch.  Despite the 8-8 record, the Cowboys made the playoffs, but required a victory in last game vs. New York Giants after blowing earlier opportunities against the 8-8 New York Jets at home and the 3-13 New Orleans Saints.  Their season ended with a loss to the Minnesota Vikings after the Vikings scored 24 unanswered points to put the game out of reach.

The 1990's ended with an overall record of 101-59 (0.631) including 12-5 in the playoffs.  The "Team of the Nineties" won 3 Super Bowl Championships, made the playoffs 8 times, and won the NFC Eastern Division Championship 6 times (including a record 5 times in a row).  After going the 29 years win only one head coach, the Cowboys are entering the next decade with their fourth new head coach in the past 11 years.
