COWBOYS FINALLY BEAT STEELERS TO WIN RECORD FIFTH SUPER BOWL

The Dallas Cowboy-Pittsburgh Steeler match-up of Super Bowl XXX was a rematch of two previous Super Bowls, both won by the Steelers. This game was marked by the return of the Cowboys who won Super Bowls XXVII and XXVIII at the expense of the Buffalo Bills both times. This was the first appearance of the Pittsburgh Steelers since the win in Super Bowl XXIV over the Los Angeles Rams. The previous games between the Cowboys and Steelers were closely contested games into the fourth quarter. This game would carry that in common. It was the result that finally differed.

To start the game, Dallas quickly drove downfield before Pittsburgh's defense stiffened and holding Dallas to a field goal. On the next possession, Dallas scored a quick pass from Aikman to Novacek. After another Chris Boniol field goal, the score was 13-0 and the rout was on, right. WRONG!! Pittsburgh's defense did not allow Dallas any more points in the first half and Pittsburgh scored right before half-time to cut the lead to 13-7.

Dallas quickly scored in the third quarter on an Emmitt Smith dive to make the score 20-7. Larry Brown's interception and possession of the 18 made it appear the game was going to be another rout. The fourth quarter brought a different light to the game. Pittsburgh held and drove down for a field goal of their own to cut into the lead. The trick-play that turned the game in favor of Pittsburgh was an on-side kick recovered by Pittsburgh and led to a touchdown. The score was 20-17. Dallas was once again unable to drive and Pittsburgh got the ball back. Pittsburgh could drive and did. But it was not meant to be for the Steelers, Larry Brown intercepted the ball and Dallas sealed the win with an Emmitt Smith touchdown. The 27-17 win erased the recent memory of the Jimmy Johnson-Jerry Jones feud and vindicated Barry Switzer in the eyes of many (but not all).
