CensorshipI REGRET ANY DUPLICATION OF THIS E-MAIL THAT SOME OF YOU MAY RECEIVE BUT, UNFORTUNATELY, IBM HAS CHOSEN TO "FILTER" MY OTHER INTERNET ID.
Dear Ms. Mohan:
GeoCities, my Internet Service Provider (ISP), advised me that IBM complained to them that my "IBM Senior Management" web site page (reference:
www.keithgibby.com) was illegal (i.e., violated privacy laws) and must be removed. As a DIRECT result of IBM’s complaint, my ISP removed the page.As I’m sure you are aware, a Federal Court recently ruled that a protester "should not be prevented from communicating information which is publicly available and presents no incitement to imminent harmful action" (reference: Federal Court Upholds Free Speech Of Cyber-Protester in Washington State:
http://www.aclu.org/news/n072898a.html) And as I’m sure you are also aware, I obtained all of the information for my "IBM Senior Management" page from public sources and IBM’s web site.Let there be no misunderstanding, IBM’s complaint DIRECTLY resulted in the CENSORSHIP of my web site.
I believe such CENSORSHIP is inconsistent with IBM’s public stance on the freedom of the Internet and e-commerce.As a result of the above, I want to give IBM the opportunity to REVERSE its complaint with my ISP or you will leave me with no choice but to publish IBM’s complaint on my web site
(in addition to IBM "filtering" of my e-mail id) and contact the ACLU, Electronic Frontier Foundation, Electronic Privacy Information Center, Digital Future Coalition, Internet Free Expression Alliance, First Amendment Center, Freedom Forum and my elected officials to express my concern with IBM’s CENSORSHIP action against me. Please note that if I do not hear back from you by close of business Thursday, 9/3, I will assume IBM will not be REVERSING its complaint. And once again (I believe this is now the 10th time), AT ANY TIME IBM WOULD LIKE TO PROVIDE ME WITH SPECIFIC CORRECTIONS TO ANY SPECIFIC "CONTENT" OR TO IDENTIFY ANY "PROTECTED" INFORMATON ON MY WEB SITE, I WILL GLADLY CORRECT/AMEND THE WEB SITE "CONTENT", AS APPROPRIATE.
Electronically yours,
Keith Gibby
