La Paz
Highest Capital in the World at 4000m
The veil of buildings suddenly lifted and the bowl shaped city appeared before us without a hint. It is densely filled with buildings, with modern high-rise clustered at the flat bottom while the shabby mud-and-brick dwellings occupy the steep slopes near the rim. The majestic snow-capped Illimani Mountain stands in guard at 6402m in the background, glistening proudly in the late afternoon sun.
The center of the city is the heart of the country's commerce and finance. Traffic system is orderly and even comes with highway and underground tunnel! These may not be surprising until one realizes that this capital reigns on the high at almost 4000m! Settlements on such a high altitude are usually underdeveloped due to the harsh environment and geographical isolation. Although the gold mining bonanza was long gone, the city remains and continues to forge ahead. Amid the modernization are old colonial buildings, historical churches, cobbled streets and traditionally dressed Bolivian, offering a glimpse of time.
With less than 24 hours to spend in the city, one of the best way to see and feel the way of the Bolivian life is to visit one of the many vibrant markets. My hotel is conveniently located within a food market. Some stalls only operate in the morning which seal off the some stretches of road to motor vehicles. The lively market sells vegetables, fruits, diary products, canned food, spice and flowers. Most hawkers and customers are dressed in their colourful ethnic dresses. Despite the photogenic setting, most locals do not wish to have their pictures taken.
