Here are a few of the more commonly asked questions about the program and about assignments. Please read all of the questions before submitting one of your own, your answer may already be here! I have a prior commitment and may miss a week of class. I know you have a strict attendance policy. What do I do?

I know we have to complete 30 hours of classroom observation, but I'm having trouble getting my hours in so close to the end of the school year. When are the hours due?

Due to the large number of interns who are having difficulty meeting the required hours of classroom observation, ATCP instructor Sharon Clark has pushed the deadline back to the end of the first summer term. That means the last day of class in June. Summer school is available in several districts for observation. Please Note: observation must be done in your certification area.

I've never taught before, how will I know what to do on the first day of school?

The ATCP does not believe in placing interns into the classroom to "sink or swim." You will receive extensive training during the summer to prepare you to enter the classroom. Your principal will assign a mentor teacher from your school to show you the ropes and assist you throughout the year. The ATCP also provides University Supervisors who will monitor your progress and act as liasons between the university and the school district. And of course, you'll be in a class of approximately 35 other first year teachers sharing their experiences.

Once I find a position, how can I legally teach in a classroom since I'm not certified?

Once you have secured employment with a school district, the ATCP will recommend you for your Probationary Certification. The Probationary Certificate is a temporary teaching certificate, good for one year. This legally allows you to teach in a Texas public school and to be considered a teacher of record in the state.

According to your literature, I have to apply to the graduate school to join your program. Why? And will I have to take the GRE?

Because you already have your four-year degree, you must apply to the graduate school in order to be eligible to take the required coursework at the University. When filling out the application, you should enter ATCP or Alternative Certification in the blank space labeled "area of study." For those individuals entering the graduate school for certification only, as you would be doing for our program, it is neither necessary nor required that you take the GRE.

Will the ATCP place me in a teaching position?

It is the responsibility of each intern to find their own position in a school district. The ATCP will attempt to assist each intern through notification of job fairs, presentation of a resume book to each district recruiter, and other assistance on an individual basis. The intern must complete and submit the school district application and interview on their own. This offers each intern the opportunity to select the district and school he/she would feel most comfortable in. Note: acceptance into the ATCP does not guarantee you a position with a school district.

Once I complete my internship year, do I automatically receive my teaching certificate?

No, completing the internship year does not automatically entitle you to certification. You must have met all state, employing district, and PVAMU requirements, and be recommended for certification by your district and the ATCP Intern Review Team. You must have passed the Secondary Professional Development ExCET and the ExCET in your content area, and achieved at least "meets expectations" on your appraisals.

During the internship year, am I paid a salary?

Yes, once accepted into PVAMU's ATCP and hired by a school district, you are eligible for first-year teacher's pay - less the $3,200 fee. You are considered a teacher of record and an employee of that school district. As such, you are subject to all rules and responsibilities as outlined in local school board policy. Once you complete your certification satisfactorily, the intership year counts as the first year of service.
