Methods And Reagents For Genetic Testing For A Predisposition To The Development Of Vaccine Associated Sarcomas In Cats
There are over 66 million domestic cats in the US and screening of all pet cats as well as more complete analysis of breeding pairs would be a simple cost effective way of reducing and managing feline oncologic and urinary problems. The association of marker allele(s) with the predisposition to development of cancers, vaccine associated feline sarcoma (VAFS) and urinary disorders in cats has been identified. Methods and reagents for the development of rapid blood diagnostic tests are disclosed. Knowledge of the inherited susceptibility to cancer development will aid diagnosis, treatment, and prevention. Cats that are predisposed to developing cancers or urinary problems may benefit from special care and diet during their lifetimes. Prior knowledge would also be extremely important in making treatment/management decisions when these cats develop these or other diseases. This simple genetic test will also enable breeders to avoid mating of animals that are susceptible to developing these conditions.
