Tools & Spares

- Toolbox:
- Plastic toolboxes are best because they don't rattle and don't make marks
on other gear. An alternative would be a soft, canvas bag. Either way,
secure that tool carrier from moving around.
- Jumper Cables:
- An absolute necessity. Cables come in various lengths, but longer ones are
more versatile.
- Tire Gauge:
- Dial type gauges are the most accurate.
- Air Compressor:
- A small, portable compressor that operates from the vehicles electrical
system can be a valuable asset. Some models plug into the cigar lighter
(remember the engine needs to be on for this socket to be powered), while
others have leads that clip directly to the battery.
- Sledge Hammer:
- A five pound sledge may be the only tool that can "persuade" a
bent piece of metal back into place.
- Combination Wrenches:
- A set of combination wrenches from 8 mm to 19 mm is a vital part of any
tool kit.
- Adjustable Wrench, 10 - 12 Inch:
- Otherwise known as a "Crescent" wrench, this big boy is useful
with large nuts and bolts and takes the place of several large combination
wrenches.
- Screwdrivers:
- A mix of a few sizes of standard and Phillips screwdrivers. The Phillips
should be of the "posi - drive" type. One large standard
screwdriver, 12 - 15 inches long can be useful as a pry bar .
- Pliers:
- Standard pliers, a 6 inch vice grip, and a large pair of "channel
lock" type pliers.
- Socket Set:
- 8 - 19 mm, including a spark Plug socket (21 mm), 3, 6, and 12 inch
extensions, and a swivel.
- Miscellaneous:
- Cold chisel, small punch, large drift, hacksaw (or hack saw blade with one
end taped), electrical test light (if you know how to use it), one pound
ball - peels hammer, and flashlight.
- Welder:
- Improvised welding can be accomplished by hooking two or three batteries
series with jumper cables and using light welding rod.
