ord of Fairlight. Lord of Socknesh or
Sworkerness, a manor situated in the extreme north of the parish
of Brithling, Sussex, close to Battle Abbey about thirty
kilometres from the sea. A manor still exists, rebuilt in the
Elizabethan era, on the site of the original house. During the 12th
century it was an important centre for the manufacture of armour
and contained many forges. Could this be the source of the "Frette"
in the St. Leger Coat of Arms? It was an important source of
income, other lands near Rye and Winchelsea. [THELMA.GED]
