Gypsy of the Year--1997

Gypsy of the Year was first held at the St. James Theatre in November, 1989 to benefit Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. This year was the ninth annual Gypsy contest. The winner, the show with the best skit, receives a plaque, lots of kudos, and the satisfaction of helping suffering people.

Prizes are given for: Gypsy of the Year (Best Skit), The BC/EFA Award (Most Money Raised), and The Off Broadway Award (Most Money Raised Off Broadway).

This year's Gypsy of the Year went to Lion King. The BC/EFA winner was Rent. Titanic finished as "first runner-up". As Bees in Honey Drown won the Off Broadway Award.

And as important and satisfying as the awards are, the real highlights are in the skits. Take your high school's variety show, throw in trained B'way professionals with famous MCs and you have Gypsy.
