Charles and Caroline's Scene

This scene followed and led up to "I Give My Hand", Charles and Caroline's song.

Charles: Caroline.
Caroline: Charles. (pause)
Charles: Are you really serious about this horse doctoring thing of yours?
Caroline: The word is veteranrian. That's not too difficult for a journalist like yourself, is it?
Charles: But darling, what do you know about veteranarian...ism?
Caroline: I've been around dogs and horses all my life and our country home in Yorkshire has over 50 head of cattle. I seem to have a remarkable rapport with animals. That's how I got you, Charles.
Charles: I just don't want you to feel that you have to work just to make ends meet.
Caroline: Oh, Charles, it's a new world. I want to work; I want to be useful. That's what America is about, isn't it?
Charles: Caroline?
Caroline: Hmmm?
Charles: Would you mind awfully if I kissed you?
Caroline: No, of course not, Charles. (Alternate: You're not awful, Charles.)
They kiss. Enter Mr. Etches
Caroline: Mr Etches!
Etches: Lady Caroline, is it you? I had no idea you were on board.
Caroline: What a nice suprise! Mr. Etches, I'd like you to meet my new husband, Mr. Charles Clarke. Charles, Mr. Etches was chief first cabin steward on the Majestic when my family and I crossed last year.
Charles: (nose in air) Mr. Etches.
Etches: Mr. Clarke, my congratulations. And how is Lord Neville?
Caroline: Oh, my father is quite well, thank you, when I saw him last.
Etches: Do give him my kind regards. I really can't understand why I've missed seeing you until now, Lady Caroline.
Caroline: It's a very large ship and we are on our honeymoon.
Etches: Yes, quite understandable. Once again, my heartest congratulations, Lady Caroline--or shall I say, Mrs. Clarke? I'm sure you'll both be very happy.
Exit Etches
Charles: You couldn't quite say the words, could you, Lady Caroline?
Caroline: What words?
Charles: Second Class!
Caroline: Oh, really, Charles, you're being______.
Charles: Why? Because all your father ever saw when he looked at me was the son of a green grocer who made______ and went to the wrong schools, who would never be good enough for his precious daughter even if I won the bloody Noble Peace Prize!
Caroline: Charles, you're being quite obnoxious.
Charles: Well, thanks very much.

Caroline begins "I Give My Hand".
