For Susan...and all of those like her

A Candlelight Vigil Across the Internet

Protesting Violence Against Women

This candle shines in memory of women everywhere whose lives have been affected by violence....

Her name was Susan and she walked into the Bible study I was leading and immediately disrupted it. She disagreed with my treatment of the passage under discussion, and with nearly everything else that came up in the group. Nevertheless, she returned several times during the following months and we tried to be patient and charitable. Her sister Mary, a regular member of our group, worried about Susan...she was living with a man who would drink and become violent, beating her and leaving terrible bruises. Mary tried to help, but Susan wouldn't--perhaps couldn't--listen. A few weeks later the couple moved from our area. Shortly after that Mary received a phone call. The man had gotten drunk and beat Susan until she was unconscious. Then he took her battered body and threw it out in the midst of the rush hour traffic in the busy city. There was the squeal of brakes and the crunch of bone. She died in the emergency room.

I will not forget Susan.

Abide with me: fast falls the eventide;
The darkness deepens; Lord, with me abide:
When other helpers fail, and comforts flee,
Help of the helpless, O abide with me!

Lyrics, Henry F Lyte
Music, William H. Monk, 1861*

"Created in November 1996 by the Canadian Women's Internet Association for what was originally supposed to be a week-long vigil, the response has far surpassed expectations. Because violence against women is an ongoing thing, so is this vigil."(Quote taken from The Canadian Women's Internet Association's "Violence Against Women" page).
