89.1 / KUAZ / Jazz
"Z 89 Jazz FM" is one of three radio stations owned by the University of Arizona. The jazz is good, but the NPR takes away from the students.

90.5 KUAT-FM / Classical
KUAT is the U of A's classical outlet.

91.3 / KXCI / Eclectic
KXCI is owned by the Foundation for Creative Broadcasting. When I volunteered there, the station had no satellite dish so the vast majority of programming was local. However, things MAY have changed since then. The KXCI studio is a majestic northeastern style house in Tucson's historic district. So yes, KXCI has a pretty big facility for a community radio station. Touring bands on road trips come to the KXCI studios to preform live on the air. KXCI is a valuable asset to the Tucson community.

92.1 / KFMA / Modern Rock
KFMA is a pretty good Modern Rock outlet! Unlike East Coast Modern Rockers, KFMA plays the Modern AC product in little rotation so the hard-hitting Modern Rock comes first. That's good to hear! The signal is bad, but the music is good. 92.1 was home to Rock AC KTZN from '92-93, AAA KEKO '93-'95. The flip to Modern Rock was made Fall '95.

92.9 / KWFM "Cool 92.9" / Oldies
"Cool 92.9" is just a standard Oldies outlet.

93.7 KRQQ-FM / CHR
Wow! Where to begin. Fisrt of all, "93.7 KRQ" always had problems identifying itslef as a Mainstream CHR. They seem to flip-flop between an Urban and Hot A.C. leans every couple of years. In '92 KRQ was dayparted with a Hot A.C. lean during the day and an Urban lean at night. They want Hot A.C. all the way in '93, but began to lean Dance in '96. Now KRQ leans somewhat Urban during the day and heavily Urban at night. Also, KRQ is the only station I know that gets away with playing "Gold" and "Recurrent" tracks in power rotation. The most infamous KRQ staple has to be their annual "Christmas Wish" charity campaign in which morning show jocks read people's Christmas wish letters on the air, use a somber version of "Silent Night" as a music bed while a jock is reading the depressing letter. Basically, it's like a funeral (they may be tears of joy, but it doesn't sound like it) hearing the people cry and sometimes wail when they find out the wish has been granted. Plus, they air the most emotional parts of the wish aboout 20 times a day!!! As much as KRQ is a yokel-local station (with huge corporate owners), the jocks and production is top-notch. The moring show "MoJo and Betsy" has fledged from a very Hot ACish morning show to a very enjoyable CHRish one.

94.1 KXKQ-FM / Country
"Kat Country" just upped their signal to now cover Tuscon. A growing standard country outlet.

94.9 KMXZ-FM / AC
"94.9 MIX FM" has evolved from a very stale A.C. known as "Cloud 95" to Hot A.C. leaning "MIX FM".

96.1 / KLPX / AOR
This once mighty Rock powerhouse has fallen! This is probably due to boring production, tight playlist for an AOR, and sister station KFMA. The signal is a 100kw flamethrower with a lot of potential. The best way to fix KLPX is to go Active Rock, go with the "96 X" monkier, get some loud jocks, add Stern and get some good liners.

97.1 / KGMS / Christian CHR
This is the only commercial Christian CHR that I know of. The station can easily fool people into thinking the format is CHR, Rock or even Dance.

97.5 / KOAZ / NAC-Smooth Jazz
"The Oasis" is Tucon's first NAC/Smooth Jazz station. I have a feeling it will do very well here. Since '92, 97.5 has been home to Satellite Classic Rocker KRKN, Satellite Country KCDI, Spanish and CHR KSJM which delivered hardcore urban tracks over the FM Tucson airwaves for the first time.

98.3 / KOHT / Urban CHR
"Hot 98 FM" has been more popular. It's format is Urban CHR with a Hispanic target demo. While the music is good for an Urban CHR, the quality of production is lacking. There's tons of dead air and the 6kw signal doesn't help either. However, it made a big enough wave in book that it has forced KRQ to lean urban.

99.5 KIIM-FM / Country
"99.5 KIIM FM" is Tucson's best radio station. The music is good for a Country station, the jocks are good and production qaulity is superior. KIIM is the only station in town to realize that the Tucson population has swelled to almost 800,000 people. KIIM is also the most listened to station in town.

101.9 KCMT / Classic Rock
This station was launched in 2001 with a standard Classic Rock format. The place to hear The Eagles, Led Zeppelin, and the Stones. KCMT has a small 6KW signal that has some coverage problems in the actual city, but covers the surrounding towns decently.

104.1 KZPT / Modern A.C.
"104.1 The Point" is Modern A.C. in Tucson, but it could be called "Modern Rock" by East Coast standards. 104.1 signed on Spring '94 with a Classical stunt to become Classic Rock KKHG "The Hog". The station flipped to Modern A.C. in '97. There are some bumper stickers around town that read "The Hog Rules, The Point Sucks"

105.3 / KZLZ "Z-Spanish" / Spanish
This is a Z-Spanish station which means mostly Satelitte Programming. This station was known as Satillite Rocker "X 105.3" in the early 90's.

106.3 / KIXD "Mega 106.3" / Urban Oldies
This is a 440w "Jammin' Oldies station! "Mega 106.3" was a Country station up to the beginning of 1999. Now they are a part of the "Jammin' Oldies" list of stations across the country. The "Jammin" format pretty much consists of Motown, R&B, Disco, and Soul oldies.

107.5 / KHYT / Classic Hits
"107.5 K-Hits" should be called a 70's A.C.! The 107.5 frequency debuted in '93 as Country KCUB. The flip to Classic Hits was made sometime in '95 or '96.
