almost traditional Irish band

THE BAND MEMBERS ARE -

Seamus Flynn – Fiddle/Whistle

After formal tutoring in Irish Music generally and the Fiddle in particular, spent several years playing at every London Irish Pub Session that he could get into (without being thrown out for being under age). Has a very analytical & structured approach to his music (not surprising since he holds a Degree in Mathematics from Leeds University) and is constantly seeking more creative and inventive ways of performing Irish Music.

Alan O’Brien – Flute/Whistle/Mandolin

Had the benefit of being born the son of Timmy O’Brien of Dingle Spike and performed on stage with his father and DS from a young age. After formal tutoring in Irish Music, he performed throughout Ireland and elsewhere at many Irish Music competitions, including the All Ireland Finals. His love of alcohol coupled with an inability to stand still whilst on stage makes for some intriguing performances.

Mary Flynn – Accordion/Whistle

Studied Irish Music for over 10 years under the same Irish Music Tutor as Alan O’Brien and her brother, Seamus. Her Accordion playing has long been the Traditional ‘anchor’ of the Band, allowing the Fiddle and Flute duets to soar without fear of them collapsing into chaos. Known affectionately within the Band as an ‘oasis of calm’, due to her ability to keep the rest of the group’s masculine excesses in check.

Mick Maher – Guitar/Vocals/Harmonica

Expatriate son of Limerick, was taught many of ‘the old songs’ from his father. A prolific songwriter, he was influenced at a young age by the early works of Christy Moore and he now strives to emulate the raw emotional feel of the great man in his own songs.

John Flynn – Bodhrán/Vocals

Although not formally taught to play the Bodhrán (he actually learned by playing his mother’s upturned washing-up bowl with his father’s old paintbrush) he has developed a unique, attacking style of playing the instrument which perfectly complements the Band’s approach to their music. Began singing at after hours drinking sessions and progressed to singing with the Band in 1997.

Martin Day – Bass Guitar/Vocals

Unelected Manager of the Band, played many years on the Country Music circuit around London, plus dalliances with Pop, Rock, Punk ("yes, I really was young once") and Cabaret (including backing Striptease Artists – both male and female!!!)
