Crete: thoughts

Lonely Beaches? Unspoilt Landscapes? Off the beaten Track adventures?
In Crete? Isn't it a mass tourism destination?

Yes, crete IS a mass tourism destination!
So the lonely places on my site are only part of the truth.
The point is: Crete -like many other larger islands- is large enough to offer both.
But most of the tourists will never see the 'other' Crete.

I know that a site like mine is a bit dangerous.
I have received a lot of mail from people who told me I should not show too much and 'keep the tourists on the beaches they have allready ruined'.
Well ... what's the alternative?
Not sharing some nice pictures that might make the internet look a bit friendlier?
I have chosen to put pictures of beautiful places on my site but to avoid to give much written details of where these pictures where taken.

I am shure that there are a lot of people who like to watch such pictures although they would not like to spend their holidays on such lonely places because they prefer the 'comfort of a normal hotel'.

For those of you who are looking for an 'off the beaten track' experience:
You will not need the details! You will find 'your' places in many parts of Crete as well as on many other Greek islands
.... or on a lot of other locations around the world!

I spent my christmas/newYear holidays 1998/99 in Jamaica
(....also a mass tourist location) and found a lot of nice 'off the beaten Track' places there
A Jamaicapage will be added to my site in 2/99.

But! wherever you go: PLEASE help to keep the nice places beautiful!
That is: Take your garbage back home with you,
adapt your behaviour and appearance to the place and the people you visit:
I have seen how St. Lucia (in the Caribbean) was ruined by tourism:
The inhabitants there seem to see tourists -first of all- as a walking purse or Credit Card.
No wonder in a poor country if most tourists come there with expensive yachts, wearing golden Rolex watches and ostentatious jewellery! Is this really necessary???

In Greece that means:
Keep the beaches clean,
respect the religous feelings of the Greek and don't enter a church or monastary with short trousers/shirts.
Try to learn at least some words of the greek language.
Don't get drunk (at least if you're among greek people)
Don't waste water! It's precious in Greece!
