From: Karen Walkowiak Subject: *Egyptian Mysteries* Scavenger Hunt *Please excuse the cross-postings!* Hi Everyone! I have just added a new Scavenger Hunt to the Holy Redeemer Resource Centre. It is called *Egyptian Mysteries* and was developed to compliment a theme on Egypt. It is appropriate for Grades 4-8. You can access it at: http://www.crcssb.edu.on.ca:1080/~red/htm/egypt.htm I have also developed a list of Egyptian pointer sites which includes links to teacher lesson plans, online quizzes and online Egyptian tours! From: jal502@juno.com Subject: Blended Classes Hi everyone, I am a Spec. Ed. teacher working collaboratively with one of my colleagues (5th grade regular ed. teacher) on a Blended Class for Science and Social Studies. It is working great and both are enjoying it immensely! Needless to say, it has been a real boost to the students as well-both hers and mine. We are trying to put together a proposal for next year which would have us teaming full-time instead of for just one class per day. Does anyone in this group have experience in this area, have any written material/research supporting this, and/or information that we can use/adapt in writing a proposal to fit our situation? Any information is greatly appreciated! You can e-mail me directly : jal502@juno.com JoAnne L. ------------------------- 4. From: "Danielle and Les" Subject: book month Book month is here and our school is having a door contest. My 5th grade students need to decorate their door with things dealing with books or reading. We were wondering if anyone has any ideas for us so we can win the Pizza party!! We have to remember that creativity is the key! Thank you, Danielle ------------------------- 5. From: Ollie.Oviedo@enmu.edu (Ollie Oviedo) Subject: Re: Chocolate Just for fun, you could show your students the most famous episode of I Love Lucy: "Job Switching". This is when Lucy and Ethel try working in a chocolate factory. Annette ------------------------- 6. From: Educator Subject: Re: Chocolate Day Hi... How about showing the movie "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory." Better yet have them read the book and design a wrapper for a chocolate bar that would be sold by Wonker's Candy factory. The wrapper would show all of the ingredients! From: ShayneeLyn@aol.com Subject: Hilighter tape You can also buy hilighter tape in sheets---they are great because you can cut the sheets into any size sqares (for big books, chart words, etc.)... It is sold in office supply stores (Office Depot in California) and it is sold as a "book cover material"......I guess you buy it to cover your textbooks because it can be taken on and off.....you can find it in high supply around September...... It might take a little explaining and a few different clerks to find it for you, but it is worth it...... If anyone wants the brand name email me and I will look for it at school!!! :) Shaynee Shayneelyn@aol.com ------------------------- 10. From: lhicks@seark.net (Ellora Hicks) Subject: internet ideas Does anyone have any 6th grade language arts ideas for using Internet in the classroom - 1 computer in the room. Lora lhicks@seark.net ------------------------- 12. From: KingCrow@Nauticom.Net Subject: Parent Visitation Day Looking for ideas for parent visitation day on November 20th for 6th grade science. Can be any fun activity, experiment... (besides making slime since another teacher does that every year) that gets the kids and parents involved. It doesn't have to be related to anything I'm teaching at the moment. If you have any ideas I would love to hear them. My e-mail is posted if you would like to e-mail me separately. Thanks, Denise KingCrow@Nauticom.Net ------------------------- 13. From: Kerri Whitehead Subject: Reading Comprehension Hi everyone! Thanks for all of the super ideas. It is so nice to be included in such a group! You are wonderful. I would like to share a site with you. Reading comprehension has been a hot subject in our district. I found a site that is managed by CNN and deals with both reading comp. and current issues. The students read an article and then answer comprehension questionws about the article--they can choose questions that deal with a number of things such as vocabulary from the article, main idea, sequencing, drawing conclusions, literal and infer. comprehension, etc. When they have finished answering the questions, they submit their answers, which are graded by the computer and then sent back (immediately)--very interactive format... I have found this to be a very valuable resource. I hope you like it, too. http://www.cnnsf.com/education/education.html KW ------------------------- 14. From: Rebecca Subject: slow worker I have a student in my fifth grade class that does not get written work done in time. She is a quiet, well behaved student. When she is given an assignment to do she daydreams, looks around the class, writes a word or two, continues to daydream, looks around....can't focus on her work for more than 5 minutes. She understands the work, that is not the problem. I have tried keeping her in at recess to finish work but I hate to do that every day. I worked with her on a strategy, I put a list on her desk that says what she needs to finish. If she finished that she will be able to build with Legos. I talked with her mom, and Legos is something she really enjoys, so she brought them in. Noone else can use them either until she is finished. So far, she has not gotten to them. Help! What am I not seeing? What can I do to help her be successful? Any ideas? ------------------------- 15. From: Suzi Less Subject: slow worker Do some research on attention deficit disorder without hyperactivity. Sometimes the child is not able to keep on task. Usually these children are not identified because they are not a behavior problem. Hopefully, some strategies can be found that aren't as drastic as drug therapy but that might be a possibility. Good luck!! ------------------------- 16. From: Lise Subject: Re: slow worker Drug theropy for ADD is not drastic. ------------------------- 17. From: skak@sover.net Subject: Teachers-teaching-teachers I'm taking a graduate course and my topic is "The Advantages of teachers teaching other teachers" because Our school system would like to save some money and have teachers go to workshops then come back and teach what they have learned. They also seem to think teachers listen to their colleagues better. It a more comfortable setting. Does any one else do this in their system? I would love to know what you think? And how it has turned out. Thanks for your help. Anita ------------------------- 19. From: jpilcher@completebbs.com Subject: Teachers-teaching-teachers While I think it is valuable to share new things you learn with other teachers, I have a real problem with the district expecting you to "teach" a workshop that you have attended to other teachers to "save money." I feel like the person presenting the workshop does that for a job (to earn a living), and it is not right for us to come back to our district and "pirate" the information for free. ------------------------- 20.
