Business as Usual
by M.L. Morgan 9-24-1999

Well, race fans, as we approach the end of another season we hear so many self-proclaimed pundits decry the so-called 'silly season'. These pundits don't have a clue and I'm not laughing. But I'll admit to laughing at some of the commentaries from these puppies.

Winston Cup Racing is currently one of the hottest properties in the business world. Bruton Smith has gone public along with King William II. Just a business deal, man. These men didn't become jillionaires by being stupid. They don't even wink any more when some neophyte refers to their business as a sport.

Neither do I wink when some mongoloid refers to 'Silly Season'. These "experts" have large followings - I guess their readers are equally thinking-impaired. I have much more respect for our Race Views' readers. I won't piss on your head and tell you it's raining; But I will tell you if something is wrong. And something is horribly wrong with this Silly-Season scenario. Major crunchies.

Inevitably, by this time every race season, there are a lot of changes being made by a lot of teams - drivers - crew chiefs - sponsors and everything related. It'll happen again next season. This is not brain surgery - this is business.

That's what rubs me the wrong way with this crowd of idiots who call this the silly season. Nothing silly about a person trying to better himself. Winston Cup Racing is a huge business. Believe it or not, I've had cub professional, unbiased reporters to bolt to lesser sites for a couple bucks. Of course, they screwed up, but I can't protect people from themselves.

Drivers, and other prominent team members do the same thing. It's just business.

Some of the really ignorant writers talk about loyalty, as if we were still in the dueling age. That's fine with me but it's just more b.s. from people who don't have a clue.

Our favorite game is just a business and I have no problem with that. I accept it as a business.

Every season we witness this same deal. Teams trying to better themselves and individuals trying to do the same. It's not "silly" - it's just business as usual.

You'll see more rhetoric about this same subject this year and next - but you won't read it here. Trust me.

It's much harder than it looks being a professional, unbiased reporter. Think I'll have a beer. Won't tell you which brand - that wouldn't be professional.
