Mike,
I was watching the race today and my phone rang. Nothing new there, it rings constantly when I am trying to watch one. What was new is that it was my mother who has never watched a NASCAR race in her life telling me, "Hey this could be worth watching, I used to love those old demolition derbies!" I thought, well, there is one way of NASCAR improving their fan base, advertise the short track races, it'll damn sure appeal to those who like wrecks. I know there are people who really like the wrecks, like the short tracks, but personally I don't think a real fan would enjoy seeing their favorite driver being cut out of car and hauled off on a stretcher; another driver maybe, but not theirs. I am probably, well definitely going to, step on toes here. But I would hope more fans felt the way I do. A track where it winner is usually {not today though} the person who can avoid wrecks, not the one with the best car does not appeal to me. I applaud Andretti's win, this is not to put him, Petty Enterprises or the STP down so don't start sending me mail defending them. What I object to is the short tracks themselves. Martinsville is a test of racers that is for sure, it tests their ability to avoid wrecks and only pit during cautions. Sure there are more tracks that do this, but how many other tracks put a driver pitting under caution 3 laps down? And how many races do you watch {and enjoy?} that have a commercial break and you have missed the end of one caution, a few green laps and a completely different set of caution laps? I ALMOST gave up watching this race, every time I stepped out of the room to refresh my drink, I missed 2 wrecks, 20 laps and another amusing story from Benny Parsons. But like most NASCAR fans, it was a race and I couldn't bring myself to turn the tv off. The powers that be know we aren't going to turn down a race, after all, we are race fans!! The best thing I can say about today's race is that my mother finally watched one all the way to the end . And I am glad I didn't turn the tv off, it was great to see a new face in Victory Lane in John Andretti and the STP team. Beat up car and all.Kriss Hollis
