Bad Rules Changes

M.L. Morgan

We recently did a column applauding Nascar’s decision to try to slow the race cars with some across-the-board aerodynamic rule changes . Now it’s time to retract our obviously premature “attaboy” . Nascar has chosen to revert to its weekly rules change scenario which does nothing but cause unrest and dissension among the racers and the fans.

It would seem the Ford teams, confronted with a new body-style very recently, did their homework during the off-season a little better than the GM teams. Maybe the Taurus body is better aerodynamically than the Monte Carlo or the Grand Prix. That’s inconsequential in my opinion. The GM teams are not comprised exclusively of trainees. These people know how to build race cars. I don’t think Nascar has to step in to help Hendricks or Childress.

Nascar seems to be maintaining its policy of greasing whichever manufacturer’s screams are the loudest. That’s a crock. Four races into the season there is no obvious disparity. All three makes have won at least one race and the point standings have a fairly equal distribution in the Top-10.

Nascar’s credibility has been tested in recent months. When Earnhardt won the Daytona 500 a few witless writers claimed it was orchestrated. I’ve got no time for them. Let them go back to writing about male skaters in sequined costumes. “Yeah, Bruce, I agree he skates backwards better than that Austrian guy”. Spare me, please.

Now we are back to the weekly rules changes. This is an atrocity. Every week, fewer and fewer fans believe Nascar is concerned with anything else but making money. King William II has had a license to steal for a long time. Every time he makes these weekly rules changes he just rubs the noses of the fans in the asphalt. I think that sucks. Quote me.

The only recourse we fans have is to limit our contributions to this charade. I won’t pay 75 bucks for a ticket or 20 bucks for a t-shirt. I can watch the races on TV for free, and I won’t have to wait in line 15 minutes to go to the bathroom or 2 hours to get out of the parking lot. Nascar has insulted my intelligence one time too often. You mean I’m paying these track-owners to force me to suffer these indignities ? Holy Nellie !

Nascar seems to endorse some series called IROC. 20 Toyotas, or some little cars like that, equally prepared and “raced” against one another. I’ll bet that’s exciting. Is that where Nascar is headed ? “Yeah, I was rooting for Bill Elliott in the green Toyota”. “No, you’re crazy ! Darrell Waltrip’s purple Toyota was obviously a better car “. Not in this lifetime, boys and girls.

For now, Nascar has fallen back into it. For the southern people I don’t need to be more descriptive. For the Jeff Foxworthy fans, that means you squatted down and fell backwards when you sure didn’t want to. Nascar has stooped to new lows, even by their non-standards. As Nascar gains nationwide acceptance they seem to go out of their way to be stupid. Or to treat the fans as if they were stupid.
