Mike,
Ahhh Mother's Day... that one time of the year where Mothers everywhere are treated like a queen... or should be. Even the almighty Nascar bows down and takes a day off for it. This year was my best ever as a mother of three. No, It wasn't the flowers, cards, jewelry, new boots, breakfast in bed or anything like that. It was learning a lesson from my oldest son and a stranger whom I will never know or ever forget. I have always said race fans are the best people in the world and after Sunday, I was proven right. You see, my 8 year old son wanted me to have a very special gift just from him.... not the ususal Granny bought it and put his name on it kind of thing. And like most children his age, he is very good with a computer, the net and his favorite websites. One of them happens to be the Adam Petty site and the discussion board. So this bright loving {no I am not in the least biased!} child posted a message asking for help in acquiring me a "very special gift", an autographed picure of Kyle Petty and Adam Petty. And me, being a typical busy mom who thought he was doing his homework on the computer, knew nothing about it. My brother later told me he and my sister knew all along, but helped keep it a secret, so it was safe! I was told to stay off the site until after Mother's Day, and being a good mother, did what I was told. This is where the real gift comes in: Another Petty fan read my son's post and after exchanging e mail with him, sent the picture Jaime` requested. Now you tell me, what other sport could a child send a call for help for a gift for his mom, it be read by another fan and the request be granted.. with no money exchanged and no stories of a sick dying child, mother, father or whomever? I could not think of a single one where this might happen... NASCAR fans are the greatest in the world.. and I'll fight anyone who tries to tell me different. Sure we are biased, opinionated, loud mouthed etc .... but we are also family.. and it took a post on a discussion board titled "For my Mom" by my son, a stranger with a good heart and an autographed picture of a father and son to remind me of exactly why I still love this sport even after all the crap shoved at the fans by the money people.....Its not Pepsi, Coke, Tide, Ford Quality Care, Valvoline, Lowe's, Home Depot, Dupont or Skittles.. its the drivers themselves, the roar of the cars, the speeds they run .......But it's also the family atmosphere and the FANS! Don't ya just love it??!!Kriss Hollis
