"Pare Down The Field"

Well, race fans, we have decided to turn our Sound Off! page over to you. This will be your forum and we encourage you to submit your opinions to us. Don't be bashful.

We Winston Cup fans are basically a soft hearted lot.

We don't mind throwing a rock or two at the big guys. The ones on top, making all the money. "Anybody but Gordon, or Earnhardt, or Jarrett, or...or...or. They'll survive our jesting, and their fattened bank accounts will keep them comfortable until we are all old and gray.

But let's address a subject we go out of our way to avoid. Take a look at the finishing order for Rockingham. Ignoring the rookies, you'll see the same familiar names that are always at the bottom of the list. The field needs to be cut to thirty five drivers, total. Provisionals should be two, or at best three. If a car or driver is not competitive, pack up, go back to the garage, and do your homework.

Winston Cup can never go back to "shoestring" racing. Let's stop pretending it can. It matters little if we think fondly of the guy behind the wheel, or that he used to be one "hell of a driver".

Unclutter the track, and let's see the best race against the best.

Editor's note: We don't happen to agree with this writer's opinions, in fact, we'd like to see the starting fields include every team which is eligible be allowed to participate. Nascar tolerates huge wrecks at the restrictor-plate tracks so why do they make exceptions at the other tracks ? It would be another trip down Nostalgia Lane. Like in the early years when 60 and 70 cars would start a race. Works for me. Of course, I own a junk yard and a fleet of wreckers, so I might not be completely unbiased.

Just a reminder we never censor viewers' opinions on our Sound Off! page.
