Well, race fans, we have decided to turn our Sound Off! page over to you. This will be your forum and we encourage you to submit your opinions to us. Don't be bashful.
Another snippet of life as a race fan from our friend "Polly".
Mike,
BEWARE THE TRUNK MERCHANT !
I admit it. I'm into Nascar collectibles. I have a spiffy race room that is getting spiffier all the time. So here I am, strolling across the parking lot of the local supermarket. Parked over in the corner is an "official Pace Car" from a race held a few years ago. Inside sits a distinguished looking man. His car is sporting decals and paraphernalia showing his support for my rival Winston Cup driver. I just happen to be wearing MY Winston Cup driver's jacket. In the good natured way we race fan have, I walk by his car and flash him the back of the jacket. He leaps out from the car. I admire his jacket, he admires mine. He comments. "I have just come from a trade show and have a few cars leftover, still in their boxes." Up flips the trunk lid. I immediately notice a ton of cars for his driver, and only one for mine. "You can have that car for $25.00. You'd pay $75.00 anywhere else." I'm hooked and curious. I ask. "How come there are so many cars for your driver, and only one for mine?" He scratches his head. "I guess my driver's fans aren't as smart as yours. They don't recognize a real bargain when they see one." Feeling quite smug, I hand him the $25.00. At home, I immediately call a fellow race fan. He quietly listens as I tell him about my great deal. Then he says. "Look on the box. Does it say Nascar anywhere?" I search for the mark I now know is not there. The car is a knockoff, worth about $1.25. I don't need to tell you which Winston Cup driver's fans are smart, and which Winston cup driver's fans are gullible. I'm sure you already know the answer to that question. BUT, I'm in the wrong group. I'm changing drivers!!!!
Editor's Note:
Polly neglected to say she bought her "prize" from the
trunk of a MONTE CARLO with CALIFORNIA tags -
she missed TWO red flags. Trust me.
