"The 1999 Awards Dinner"

Well, race fans, we have decided to turn our Sound Off! page over to you. This will be your forum and we encourage you to submit your opinions to us. Don't be bashful.

We are happy to hear from our newest correspondents, Lolita & Louella - I guess they only need one name.

There we were looking at our official "Superstars of Nascar Calendar", hummmmmm, it shows Dec. 4th, as the first day of winter, (we kid you not). Everyone knows that the day after the December 3rd Nascar Banquet, is the start of the "off season", hence winter.

As two of Race Views' roving reporters, Louella and I got ourselves all gussied up, and headed for New York to cover the big event. All the main players were in attendance. The drivers, owners, crew members, wives and many corporate heads.

Of course, the wives knew what was required. The chubbettes must sit in the back of the room, and no homemade dresses this year. So, naturally, the first few rows had women tanned, fit, bejeweled, and carefully coiffed (no teased hair, thank you very much).

One notable exception was a wife looking remarkably like our down home female impersonator, Darcel. For that matter, after careful inspection, "it" had to be Darcel.

Louella and I were concerned about the jewelry problem. Some teams have fallen on hard times. One particular wife known for the large rock on her neck, (she really does have a lump "on" her throat when hubby races), surprised us with a multi-layer diamond necklace. "It was "BORROWED!!!BORROWED!! Lolita." "Hush Up Louella, that is only hearsay."

Dresses were mostly in the holiday spirit, bright and low cut, the best Target has to offer. The gentlemen, were tuxedoed, save the champ Dale Jarrett. We would guess he had his choice. Louella thought it was funny, but it snot. He should have followed the dress code.

The intimidator looked spiffy in all black. Dale paid homage to his wife. "Theresa gets better looking every year". Hold on to those Winston Cup teams, dearie. You'll be 75, and Dale will still be saying the same thing. All were smiling and laughing at Dale's comments on Bristol. Everyone but that sourpuss, Terry Labonte. Come on Terry, get a sense of humor.

The hit of the evening was Bobby Labonte , reading the stickers on his car. Good job. You'll not miss a sponsor that way. We could go on and on. But in all fairness, it was a fine event.

Lots of money was passed out. Dale Jarrett gave one of the best, heartfelt speeches we've heard on the Nascar stage. Same for Dad, Ned Jarrett. Dale was a very popular winner. He brings "family" togetherness to our sport. As for Louella and me, we are looking forward to covering "The Fashion Picture At Daytona".

Editor's note: We think Lolita and Louella did a fantastic job. We can hardly wait for their piece from Daytona.
