THE TEAM OF 1986
Héctor "Bambino" Veira's River Plate
reached the top stage
along all the millionaire teams ever, mainly
because of two
achievements: becoming Latin America champion
by winning
the Libertadores Cup against the América
de Cali, and becoming
World champion by winning the Intercontinental
Cup against the
Steaua Bucarest in Tokio.
To be remembered...
The "Bambino" and his coaching team of 1986.
They managed
to make the team which gained the maximun
international
trophy the club could go for, the Intercontinental
Cup.
They put River Plate among the greatest football
teams
of the world.
Juan Gilberto Funes, the "Buffalo", his feet
started the
dream. His wonderful goal against the América
de Cali
of Colombia gave River its first Libertadores
Cup, after
having loosing it on two opportunities in
1966 and 1976.
Unfortunately he died a short time later.
But his spirit
and his figure will be forever printed in
the eyes of
the millionaire's fans for the rest of their
lives.
The "Beto" Alonso cheers his goal to the classic
opponent,
Boca. Alfaro joins him on his celebration.
The number 10
of River was a real nightmare for the Boca
Juniors' fans
during the 80's. But at the end of this period
he lost his
place inside the team, and had to wait for
a chance to play
again, which never came. He seemed to be forgotten
by the
coach but he will never be out of River Plate's
History.
From the Oriental Republic of Uruguay came
in 1986 the
maximun idol of the club. The "Prince" Enzo
Francescoli.
He landed at the beginning of the decade and
amazed all
the people of River with his talent. Unfortunately
he
left the team before being able to play the
Libertadores
Cup, which he would win 10 years later when
he returned
to River Plate.
